I just got a deal (I think) on a 6PG+ this morning. I purchased another projector to set up a game room for my son. He is playing with his ps3 on a 21", 480i TV. Horrible!

The previous owner of the pg said he put around 15 hours on the new tubes and then he stored it for a few years. Now I did not get a chance to verify this but if it is true, I am wondering how this thing would compare to my Ampro 4000G. My 4000 really throws an awesome picture on my 8 feet wide screen and, the LC tubes are really in good shape plus, it is already set up. I want to keep the best one for HT use. Just wanted to inquire with the people in the know to see what they think, pros and cons.

The 6PG+ has EM focus, so as the tubes age it will maintain a tighter focus.

If you look at the rankings chart http://www.curtpalme.com/Projector_Rankings.shtm they are in the same basic category. The Nec units are pretty famous for very loud fans.

The only Nec I've seen in person was an XG (LC) version, which was amazing - but its is a step up from the 6G+.

Glad to hear the Ampro is working well for you.

Thanks guys

Love the Ampro.

I am not using an htpc at the moment. I got that out of the loop last year. But now that I have a new quad core, just might bring it back and try the power strip timings. The scrrenshots are incredible.

I think the Ampro will still look better, but the NEC is no slouch either.

I was thinking tha,t if I worked at it a bit more and, if I used those power strip timings, I might be able to get a similar picture with the Ampro! Does the fact that it refreshes the interlaced signal 96 times a second improve picture quality or does it simply remove the jaggies? Again, great picture.

it removes jaggies when playing movies (23.976 fps) and eliminates flickering.
Bandwidth requirements are of course higher than 1080i72, but are the same as 1080p48, and thus still significantly lower than 1080p60.

What is the formula for figuring bandwidth requirement at a specific resolution?

For a display device it should be in the range of pixel clock devided by 2 to 1.5.

Don't get confused by Extron's claims that would suggest that a much higher bandwidth is needed. It's because their devices are in the middle of a display chain, and thus need to be spec'd higher to ensure no detrimental effect on the image.

If the 6PG+ has been sitting check the tubes to see if there's still an air bubble in there. If not you'll need to bleed the tube and release the presure.

Well, the question of which pj will throw a better picture is now irrelevant. The tubes on the Nec are toast. At least that's what it looks like after checking with a flashlight. Good for parts.
One thing I was wondering! Do these pj's come with HD 145 lenses because thats whats on them?

yes, PG+ comes with HD-145 and Xtra comes with HD-144 or HD-145 lenses. Also the XG AC comes with either HD-145 (XG1350) or HD-144 (XG 750, 852) lenses.
PG6/9000 came with color filtered HD-6C ML lenses.

one thing I forgot in my previous post:

it is highly recommended to not mount the PJ too close to the ceiling. The standard mount does not give enough clearance to keep temps low enough to allow for any fan mods.

Personally, I have the PJ mounted to a Sony PSS-10, with about 12" of clearance from the bottom of the PJ to the ceiling. Mounting it that way will result in tremendous temparature drops.
