|
|
I've been jonesing for a good pair of speakers to run for music upstairs in my house since i brought the Vegas down to the HT, and after waiting a while I just snagged a pair of Wharfedale Modus 8 speakers on Freecycle. I haven't fired them up yet, but they seem to be in excellent condition, just a little dirty. The guy who gave them away said that his amp died. Seems like an odd reason to throw out speakers, but there you go...
So, are these things any good? Has anybody got any documentation?

If they are what I think they are, yeah, they're fine. They look 'modular', as in mid, high and woofer. Made in the 80s sometime. I think it's only the front that looks modular, it's a big cabinet speaker like any other.
We repaired some when I had a retail repair shop going from 1991-1994. Sounded fine. Wharfedale is usually pretty decent stuff.

I'm about to go fire 'em up. I think these are from the late '90s - there's a web site with tons of reviews from people who bought them for 200 to 300 bucks on ubid. Couple of general ecommcerce sites have them listed but out of stock. Retail 1250 bucks.
Most of the reviews are complimentary, amidst a few guys sniffing, "I guess these are ok, if you like -cheap- speakers...."

If they're anything like the Emerald 97 towers I got from ebay for $270 *delivered*, back in 2003, they'll be fantastic. I don't have a golden audiofool ear, but paired with my Adcoms they sound fantastic and very detailed. Very respectable low end for only having dual 7" woofers as well. If I could only find more, I'd be in heaven, but it seems like Wharfedale blew out all their stock in the early 2000s.

So I just threw some randomness at 'em, and I'm pretty happy. No way do they have the low end response of the vegas, and I doubt they can match the vegas when truly cranked up (didn't try that) but above 100hz and under 8/10 I think they'll be pretty damned good. I'm a happy boy. Can't argue for four bucks in gas.
Only negative is a tiny little divot in one of the tweeters (which are completely open domes... not gonna be good when kid gets to about 3' off the ground) but I doubt it makes a huge difference. Kinda pisses me off, though.

Silk domes? With some cheaper speakers I've just literally put my mouth on the tweeter dome and sucked the dent out

By carefully pushing on other parts of the dome (it's made of a kind of rubbery stuff) I can pop it back out, but it pops back in when I 'let go'. I think it's remembering the dent.

I don't know if you're married, but I have this vision of your wife walking in on you and the speaker, and you whipping around in terror, falling on your ass, and yelling, "It's not what you think!" as she turns around and leaves...
