Nearly 20 years after riding his last Crusade, Harrison Ford makes a welcome return as archaeologist/relic hunter Indiana Jones in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, an action-packed fourth installment that's, in a nutshell, less memorable than the first three but great nostalgia for fans of the series. Producer George Lucas and screenwriter David Koepp (War of the Worlds) set the film during the cold war, as the Soviets--replacing Nazis as Indy's villains of choice and led by a sword-wielding Cate Blanchett with black bob and sunglasses--are in pursuit of a crystal skull, which has mystical powers related to a city of gold. After escaping from them in a spectacular opening action sequence, Indy is coerced to head to Peru at the behest of a young greaser (Shia LaBeouf) whose friend--and Indy's colleague--Professor Oxley (John Hurt) has been captured for his knowledge of the skull's whereabouts. Whatever secrets the skull holds are tertiary; its reveal is the weakest part of the movie, as the CGI effects that inevitably accompany it feel jarring next to the boulder-rolling world of Indy audiences knew and loved. There's plenty of comedy, delightful stunts--ants play a deadly role here--and the return of Raiders love interest Karen Allen as Marion Ravenwood, once shrill but now softened, giving her ex-love bemused glances and eye-rolls as he huffs his way to save the day. Which brings us to Ford: bullwhip still in hand, he's a little creakier, a lot grayer, but still twice the action hero of anyone in film today. With all the anticipation and hype leading up to the film's release, perhaps no reunion is sweeter than that of Ford with the role that fits him as snugly as that fedora hat. --Ellen A. Kim

Paramount Home Entertainment has announced that they will bring 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull' to Blu-ray on October 14th, day-and-date with the DVD release. No technical specs have been announced at this time, though you can expect the typical 1080p AVC video and Dolby TrueHD treatment from Paramount.

Extras will include a segment on how the new movie evolved over its long development period; a production diary including glimpses of location shoots in New Mexico, Connecticut and Hawaii; and segments on makeup, visual effects and the crystal skulls at the heart of the action.

It was also revealed that while a DVD box set with all four Indiana Jones films will also be released, there are currently no plans to bring the remainder of the series to Blu-ray.

Why pre-order something with no delivery date? There are Blu-ray titles with delivery-less conditions that I've been waiting on for more than a year and no hopes of seeing it this year.

If it's a movie you know you definitely WANT and places like Amazon offer offer free shipping in the US and a price guarantee why not pre-order like this? The price guarantee makes sure you get the lowest price over the period when the movie's available for pre-order. If you only order once it's out you get that price. If you pre-order and it dipped for 1 day some time in the middle, you get that lower price.

Yep. Now, if it was Duke Nukem Forever, on the other hand...

Kal,
Do you know if they charge your credit card on a pre-order? If not I see no reason to not do pre-releases? You won't get it any sooner in store.

They do not charge you until the item ships. You can change or cancel the order any time before it ships. They typically ship a day or so before it's available retail so that you get it the same day.

End result is usually getting it the same day as when it comes out in stores for the same price or less, without the hassles of having to drive to the store to get it.

A lot of people like to be able to place the preorder the day they see something they know they want and then can simply forget about it. Sometime in the next 2-6 months it'll show up at their door at the same price or less than what they'd pay to drive down the a store. Personally I love this idea but I'm not in the US so shipping isn't free so I tend to bundle up the movies. Buying from Amazon still works out to much much cheaper than buying in local stores for me.

BTW, I am only picking on Pre-Order business practices. To me, its like conducting business on speculation. I remember when the Xbox 360 was announced and some retailers took orders beyond the first year's available inventory and people got screwed big-time. I guess I just never though of a BD movie being unavailable once it is released. I just don't see the demand exceeding inventory supply capacity to justify conducting business on Pre-Order concept.

More info:

Indiana Jones is coming to Blu-ray, with Paramount Home Entertainment announcing an October next-gen debut for his latest adventure, 'Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.'

In what is sure to be one of the most highly-anticipated Blu-ray releases of the year, Paramount has confirmed an October 14 street date for the $300 million-plus-grossing 'Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull,' which will hits day-and-date with the standard DVD.

Arriving as a two-disc set, disc one will see a BD-50 dual-layer presentation with 1080p video and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround audio. (French and Spanish Dolby Digital 5.1 Surround dubs are also included, along with English, French and Spanish subtitle options.)

Extras on disc one include a pair of featurettes ("The Return of the Legend," "Pre-Production") and -- exclusive to the Blu-ray release -- the "Indiana Jones Timeline," a Bonus View picture-in-picture track presenting three different journeys that "explore the movie through interactive timelines that include video featurettes, in-depth information and unique imagery."

Disc two boasts six "Production Diary" segments with cast & crew ("Shooting Begins: New Mexico," "Back To School: New Haven, Connecticut," "Welcome to the Jungle: Hilo, Hawaii," "On-Set Action," "Exploring Akator," "Wrapping Up!"), six additional featurettes ("Warrior Makeup," "The Crystal Skulls," "Iconic Props," "The Effects of Indy," "Adventures in Post Production," "Closing: Team Indy"), three pre-visualization sequences, and five still galleries ("The Art Department," "Stan Winston Studios," "Production Photographs," "Portraits," "Behind-the-Scenes Photographs").

Finally, Paramount has issued the Blu-ray box art for 'Kingdom of the Crystal Skull':

Suggested list price for the Blu-ray has been set at $39.98.

At press time, Paramount has confirmed that there are no plans to bring any of the classic Indiana Jones trilogy to Blu-ray, nor any box set release of all four films, at least not in 2008. Of course we'll keep you posted should there be any further developments.

That is just stupid. Well, Paramount, I'll hold off until you do release the original movie on Blu-ray. J-A's.

Yeah, unfortunate. Was looking forward to the original movies on Blu-ray more than the new one.

The few opinions I heard from people who saw the movie said it sucked, but then again everyone has their own opinion.

From what I understand, it's about equal to the 3rd movie: Not as good as the first, but better than the second.

Honestly, I thought it was pretty lame. Instead of making it it's own film, they tried to make it into some kind of reunion movie. I guess overall, I got the impression that there just wasn't much thought put into the story, so they took bits and pieces from other movies to use as filler. But like Walter said, opinions vary.

I should clarify though that when I saw it, the focus was off so bad that I was unable to ever get immersed in the film.

One of the comments I heard about it was " Man I've seen guys get fired upon with bullets and not get killed but this one takes the cake and then He fires one shot and kills all the bad guys".

IMO the third was better than the first. Though both were better than the second.
