i just got my projector (ECP 4100) back up and running after replacing the low voltage power supply and i had the side panels off to service it. so i tried leaving them off so i didn't have to use the fans. suddenly it goes black accompanied by a click click click click .... i fired it up again like 15 min later.. it does the same thing. i'm letting it cool off for a bit before i try it again. the error light comes on in the back... is it dead or just overheated? will it be ok if i just let it cool off?

Can you take a picture of the error light?
I would let it cool off for a bit before you try to power it on again. Make sure you reconnect the fans before you power it on again.
I would start by reseating the boards, it's hard to be more helpful until we know the specific error code.

i understand, its just the red error light in the back where all the green lights are on the back of the ecp 4100. my screen (of course the tubes) went out.. i shut it off immediately to not do any permanent damage (i hope its ok) i put the side panels and the fans back on. i have a fan blowing toward the fan openings to cool it down.
just out of curiosity, what would reseating the boards do? i'll do it anyway, i assume they're all in the back of the set.

the error light comes on.. then when the set turns on, the error light goes out. but the clicking sound remains, a bit slower, like an arcing sound? but still no image on the screen.

Clicking sound could be a HV problem. Check all of the HV lines at the splitter and reconnect anything that seems suspect.
Reseating the boards will ensure that you have good connections throughout the machine and is generally a good first step when you're having problems.
Do you get anything on the tubes like internal test patterns or menu's?
