Yup. Me too - I've heard nothing but good things about this movie, and not just from comic book fans.

Your avatar's another one I'm looking forward to (Bond). Wink

Ironman was awesome! I was hesitant when I first heard Robert Downey Jr. was playing the part but he was spot on. He IS Tony Stark.

Believe it or not, I didn't even see Casino Royale until about a month ago. I had kind of lost interest in Bond movies but this one renewed my faith in the franchise and Daniel Craig is a really great Bond. I think Quantum of Solace is going to be good too since it's basically Part II of Casino Royale. Supposedly the movie picks up 10 minutes after the first one left off.

Agreed. Daniel Craig is fantastic as Bond. I much more enjoy a relunctant Bond who gets hurt/beat up over the suave/debonaire stuff from earlier bonds. From what I understand the books were a lot grittier than what the earlier movies showed - more like the last one (Casino Royale). Hopefully the next movie due out later this year will be just as interesting.

The next month is a bit slow for releases but the next 6 months after that will be especially busy. Time to save my pennies for some Blu-rays. Smile

I've enjoyed 3 great new releases the last few weeks.

Vantage Point

The Bank Job

21

Of the three I liked Vantage Point the best.

I watched this one last night on Blu-ray and loved it! If you're a fan of moves in the style of 'Lock Stock & Two Smoking Barrels' or 'Snatch' definitely give 'The Bank Job' a spin.

I also have 21 not watched yet) and if you like Vantage Point more than the other two I'll have to definitely get it as well!

Iron man was a definite buy on my list since watching it at the cinemas. It has everything going for it for awesome demo material videa and audio and d-box wise, so hopefully the transfer is top notch.

More new information:

Quote:
Confirming the rumors, Paramount has officially announced 'Iron Man' for Blu-ray release this September, as a two-disc special edition with hours of HD bonus features.

Ending weeks of speculation, Paramount has finally confirmed a September 30 Blu-ray touchdown for the Robert Downey Jr. blockbuster, which grossed over $300 million at the domestic box office this summer. Due day-and-date with the standard DVD, the Blu-ray will come as a two-disc set with extensive bonus features and BD-Live content.

Tech specs for the main feature include a BD-50 dual-layer presentation with 1080p video and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround audio.

Extras will be consistent between the Blu-ray and the DVD (with the Blu-ray content in full 1080 HD). Disc one will include the six-part documentary "Hall of Armor: The Invincible Iron Man" ("Origins," "Friends & Foes," "The Definitive Iron Man," "Demon in a Bottle," "Extremis and Beyond," "Ultimate Iron Man"), plus deleted and extended scenes.

Disc two includes an additional seven-part documentary "I Am Iron Man" ("The Journey Begins," "The Suit that makes the Iron Man," "The Walk of Destruction," "Grounded In Reality," "Beneath the Armor," "It's All in the Details," "A Good Story, Well Told"), the "Wired: The Visual Effects of Iron Man" featurette, a Robert Downey Jr. screen test, "The Actor's Process" rehearsal footage, a short film by The Onion ("Wildly Popular Iron Man Trailer to be Adapted into Full Length Film"), still galleries, and the original theatrical trailer.

Exclusive to the Blu-ray release will be BD-Live functionality (Profile 2.0 required) on disc one, including the "Iron Man IQ" interactive feature.

I have not seen this movie yet. Did Robert Downey Jr.do a good job in it? I have to wonder after I keep laughing at his role in Tropic Thunder.

Downey is good, and the movie rocks. It's a fun action movie, and they actually did a good job of making Iron Man plausible. (Assuming you believe a wunderkind genius billionaire could actually create the kinds of things he uses in the movie, like an uber-capable AI that runs his house and his design workbench.)

It's official - it's a MUST HAVE disc!

Order Iron Man (2008) from Amazon - save 35! Video: 4.5/5 Audio: 5/5

HD Video Quality: 4.5/5

'Iron Man' comes to Blu-ray as easily the most anticipated Paramount title of the year, and perhaps that of any major studio. This is the kind of film you hope will deliver a new demo disc, and the kind of film that you bought a Blu-ray player for in the first place. While I don't think this 1080p/AVC MPEG-4 encode (framed at 2.40:1 and spread across a BD-50 dual-layer disc) is absolutely reference-quality, it's a mighty fine presentation that largely hits the bull's-eye.

The film has a split personality for a visual style. Shot with both traditional anamorphic and Super35 film processes, the early desert scenes have a much starker, grittier quality, while the latter half of the film is much more glossy and slick. As such, while the source is spotless, there are some apparently intentional inconsistencies in contrast, blacks and color saturation.

Some of the early scenes suffer from a color palette that tends to be slightly oversaturated, which mucks up fleshtones a bit and can leave the image looking fuzzy and slightly flat. Darker scenes here also tend to flatten out a bit, while contrast runs hot which results in blown out whites. There is also slight grain here, though I welcomed it as it added a film-like look and offset some of the digital-ization due to the more stylized elements of the transfer.

When the film really kicks into gear and introduces Iron Man 2.0, is when the presentation really soars. Colors are vibrant and lush, blacks excellent, and detail and depth quite wonderful. Fleshtones also become a bit more realistic, giving the film a very polished look yet still retaining a natural and dimensional picture. There are many sequences here (particularly Iron Man's first night flight, as well as the climactic battle) that can easily serve as demo material.

Despite some inconsistencies, Paramount has produced an impeccable encode. There are no obvious artifacts, noise or any motion jaggies. Edge enhancement is also not an issue. 'Iron Man' doesn't quite earn a five-star rating from me, but this is still a generally excellent presentation that shouldn't disappoint.

HD Audio Quality: 5/5

Paramount provides a English Dolby TrueHD 5.1 Surround mix (48kHz/24-bit) for 'Iron Man,' and it's terrific. Now, this is what home theater is all about, and this Blu-ray is bound to be a new showroom staple at Best Buys across the nation.

'Iron Man' is so much fun because the character himself is a one-man crash test dummy. He clangs, he bashes, he bursts, he blows sh*t up. Discrete effects alight the surrounds every moment he's on-screen, especially as he's usually in the middle of some big-budget action sequences surrounded by gunfire, explosions and lots of screaming baddies. The rears creating a completely convincing, three-dimensional environment with airtight imaging between channels and a depth of fidelity to dynamic range that's top-notch. Minor ambiance is also very well sustained, so there's rarely a dull moment on this soundtrack.

Dynamics are also superb. Low bass is some of the best I've heard since titles like 'Transformers,' with the film's climactic battle in particular a real scorcher. The full frequency spectrum is note-perfect, and at a loud volume, the level of clarity and detail is reference-quality. Dialogue is firmly placed in the center channel except for a few vocal effects, and is never overwhelmed by the action. 'Iron Man' is definitely going to be one of this year's most justifiably-praised demo soundtracks on Blu-ray.

It's also 35% off now instead of 30%.

Got mine in the mail a couple of days ago... haven't had time to watch it yet. Wife wanted to watch "Sex and the City" first last night. Wink

I don't know what you’re buying habits are, I only buy about one disk a week so I would rate it way above average for my weekly purchases.

A few scenes did seem a little soft and some of the dark scenes on my system lacked punch and looked a little washed-out. It was a good transfer but not great. The story and action just seemed like a nice balance. IMO if you want a good demo disk for CRT check out Speed Racer, story sucks but the color is incredible.

What did you think of that?...Not the story but being in HD, the girls are really starting to show their age. I'm not sure HD is right for them anymore or perhaps the makeup people could have done a better job.
