Over at AV123.com a guy had posted a question about setting up a home theater from scratch. I had posted a link to a person's setup on the A site that had basically put curtains all the way around the room. I noticed the guy was located in Virginia so I also linked to the upcoming meet at William's so that he could get a look at a nice setup and talk to some knowledgable people. Below is one of the responses.

Yeah? So? 
Fanatics and/or cheapskates. At the time I got my first CRT, it produced better PQ than any digital for 5x the price. If I could have afforded it, even a cleaned-up and guaranteed pj from Curt would still have been half or less of any decent digital. Today I think the ratio is still similar. For the really good digitals you're looking at $5k or more, whereas you can get a great unit from Curt for half that, and DIY projectors are very do-able under $1k.
But it is definitely a lot more work. Either you learn to set it up yourself, or you hire somebody, in which case you lose much or all of the price advantage.

cheap 720 projector technology is for fat virgins who live in their mothers' basements...
CRT technology is for intelligent gentleman who set them up in their own basements, as dark and dingy as they may be...

CRT technology is for people who like to torture themselves over whether they are getting the best pq or not and then torture themselves some more figuring how they can go about getting that better pq for less than 10$!

You do mean at Williams' right? I don't think Clarence is having a meet but he will be at Williams' get together as far as I know.

CRT is for MEN. Men who are willing to pay the price to reach the pinnacle of Home theater perfection.
Digital is for weekenders. Little girly men who want something quick and easy. Guys with more money than willpower.

LOL, I think this is going to be a fun thread.
I guess i'm a "fanatic" since i have both a vinyl rig and a CRT. My one experience with tube based amps was a dissapointment though, so I guess i'm only 66.6% fanatical.

an inexpensive one, Onyx (Melody) SP3 at $500. Cheap tubes can be hit or miss. And its true tubes dont always "play well with others" I've had a lot of experience with Conrad Johnson. http://www.conradjohnson.com/It_just_sounds_right/current-products.html
They are very warm sounding and work well with a variety of speakers.

Played a Fender bass guitar in my early years w/ a Sun head tube amp and dual 18". Couldn't be duplicated in warmth in my opinion but this is old school and you guys wouldn't understand. My girlfriends back then thought it was the best seat in the house so has some merit. Love the Funk Bros but getting off topic. Doug

That was a huge part of my motivation. Basically, bang for buck. I got my first CRT about 5 years ago - back when a digital at practically any price or size looked like ass even compared to a mid-range CRT. I've always been into video and photography, so it doesn't help that I know exactly how images SHOULD look.
Things are finally starting to change now with digitals getting better and cheaper, but I'm still thrilled with my CRT purchases thus far and have no regrets. I've lost hardly any money on my CRT projectors - something I couldn't say if I had bought digital projectors - used or new. The G70 I lucked into should work for me for at least the next couple of years - maybe even longer. Until you can get JVC RS2-level performance for under a couple grand, I don't think I'll even feel any upgrade-itis. Unless maybe I stumbled onto a sweet deal on a G90...
"Fanatic" isn't really a good label for us as it defines "uncritical zeal" - basically "fan-boyism" in Interweb terms. That would be like we say, "I don't care if CRT is any good or not - I love it, anyway." I think very few of us feel that way!
We all have good reasons for liking or preferring CRT: Cost, bang-for-buck, image quality, image quality at a certain price, etc. all play into our decision.
I'll pass on the "fanatic" label and will accept "enthusiast" as a label, instead. I'm enthusiastic about CRT's image quality and about it's low (relative) cost. I'm also enthusiastic about movie-watching, and about good sound. I might be an absolute black "zealot", though.

Now that is a real tube amp.
I have heard them drive Peak Consults Dragon and I can honestly say that I have not heard any better. I could hardly believe the punch coming from those tube amps. But then again they are two big mono blocks.

the idea that cheap bastards are the only one with CRT is something that I would not be pushing, it is simply not true and is only bait for people to make fun of those in this hobby
I think of CRT as being for those that care about the best film playback PQ, bottom line 
the cheap part is not something that many of us want associated with CRTing, while it just so happens to be true that CRT is cheaper on some levels and is the ultimate in DIY, we should be talking about the PQ merits first and foremost, instead of saying CRT is great because of the cheaper prices
as for tube amps, build your own
