I am currently trying to get the best from my G70 with worn blue and green tubes, I notice that there is very little control when trying to adjust brightness, also when no signal is input the blue tube does not remain lit wheres the red and green still remain lit. The model I have was built in 1999 serial number 2000369 is this a first generation machine where I can adjust G2 or the later unadjustable model as I do not seem to be able to adjust G2 via the bias/gain controls.

With no input all the CRT's should be turned off. G2 does sound like it needs adjustment...

Exactly, having owned a Sony 12XXX series for many years and adjusting the G2 is by using a multimeter to adjust to 4v,
how do I adjust G2 on a G70, Bias or Gain or both or what?

Bias is the G2 settings and gain is the higher IRE settings. also read this, https://www.curtpalme.com/forum_archived/viewtopic.php@t=10457.html but new tubes should be put in i'd start looking for them, seems like G70 tubes are hard to find.

What's the firmware numbers Mike?
G2 adjustment on the G70 depends on what version of firmware you have. With the newest firmware (which is what I have) G2 is automatically set so there is no adjustment.

The G2 is adjusted through a DAC on the YB board, which controls the G2 voltage on the PA board

You can only adjust the G2 settings if you have early firmware 1.03
Once you go to newer firmware you cannot go back to 1.03 (at least not easily) and have no way to adjust the G2. G2 is adjusted on 1.03 by hitting the bias key twice. Go into the "Bias" adjustment while in the service mode and then hit the Bias button again and it should change from "BIAS" to "G2" in the upper left hand side of the screen.

G2...on the old firware 1.03
Set the Contrast at 80 and Brightness at 50 and put the Bias & Gain at the basic settings listed in the Service Manual for 6500K. Turn off the ABG and go into the G2 settings and select the "pluge" pattern (there are only 3 patterns you can select in the G2 mode) and raise or lower each G2 setting until you can just see the brightest bar of the pattern on the screen. The room should be completely dark and you should turn off the colors not being adjusted.
