I was at a county surplus auction today. Mostly I was looking to pick up a cheap extra pc, but it was all pentium II crap. To my surpise, they did have two sony g70 projectors. They sold to the same guy for $90 each. I was the only other bidder, and I dropped out at $85.
They were in totally unknown condition as to whether they worked or not. No remotes. From what I could tell using the tiny flashlight with a mostly dead battery out of my glove box, the blue and green tubes on one machine were 6's on the wear chart. The other one had a blue 7 and a green 6. Both reds looked like 9's. No text burns or anything like that.
Did I make the right move, or should I have gone a bit higher? I felt bad letting them go so cheaply, even though there's probably no way I would have gotten them anyway. I spoke to the winning bidder afterwards, and even though he didn't know much about them, he seemed pretty confident he'd be able to resell them for about $900 each. I told him he might be lucky to get half that, but I don't think he believed me. Also, keep in mind that I am under an ongoing threat of instant death if I spend any more money on audiovisual equipment any time soon.

I'd have paid $250 each for them no matter what the shape, as long as they were complete. Mind you, you're in NY, so shipping would have been $300+ each, so never mind..
But yeah, you bailed too low on those.

I would have paid about the same as Curt just to have spare parts machines.

It was the Erie county surplus auction. They hold them about twice a year at ECMC. I've been going for about 4-5 years, and these are the first projectors I've ever seen.
My logic on bailing when I did was that I figured I could sell them on ebay/craigslist for only about $200-300 each. Parting them out wasn't an option as I don't have the storage space or the WAF to do that. It would have been a lot of trouble for only a possible $200 or so profit. There was no way I would keep them, as my Barco has way nicer tubes.
Plus, after talking to the guy who ended up buying them, I'm pretty sure he would have gone to $400-500 or more each. He was fairly confident he could sell them higher than that (although he didn't even know about looking in the lenses to judge the tubes). He was just buying up all sorts of electronics for resale.

I can understand your interest in buying a couple of parts PJ for your own use but anyone other than Curt buying these is just nuts. Like "Oooo, it was such a good deal, I couldn't pass it up" I don't sell projectors, I don't sell parts even though I have a boatload of AmPro parts. Why? Because I can't stand behind them. If I'm forced to sell a part, I have to charge Curt's price because if the part fails, I would have to give the money back or replace it with a part from Curt plus shipping.
Do the world a favor and "just say no" When you find a good deal on a projector you really have no use for, just give the lead to Curt. Then all the used parts are under one roof with a warrantee

I think you bailed at the right time.
If you don't need them, there's only a tiny, tiny resale market left.

I know Curt has all the parts I'll ever need and I have gotton some parts from him before, however it would be nice to have backup parts on hand so I don't have to wait two weeks to get going again.

What barco do you have? Never seen a Barco in person set up. Just the runcos at the Speaker Shope And my own Marquee's.

No, it's in an old storage building behind the big ECMC hospital on Grider St. off the 33. Usually they list them a week or two ahead on a Sunday in the Buffalo News, with some of the "highlights" of the sale - old computers and shop equipment along with lots of desks, chairs and file cabinets. The website for the auction company posts some pictures, too. They open an hour or so beforehand, so you can browse around and see if there's anything worthwhile to bid on. Usually 90% is garbage, stuff that's so bad, broken, or outdated that even the county doesn't want it. The best items are the seized property and evidence from the sheriff's department. Mostly electronic equipment that was at least worth it for someone to steal.
I have a Barco 1208/2. I bought it about a year ago off craigslist from a college kid in Rochester who got it from RIT. It's set up in my basement, but I'm sure it's nowhere near it's capabilities, as I really have very little idea of what I'm doing. I can follow instructions, and go through the setup menus, but I don't know how to do things like astigmatism, beam focus, or yoke adjustment. Any interest in helping out a near rookie? By the way, I live in Pendleton, and have plenty of beer in the fridge.

Seriously though, $900. is fantasy land, an as-is G70 hasn't commaned those kinds of prices on e-bay in the last 3 years at least. Judegeing by your look at the tubes, and completely unknown electronic condition, you did that guy a HUGE favor by keeping the bidding under 100 bucks and kept a fool and his money from being parted.

The only thing that bugs me is the bad luck of having that one particular guy show up, when I've never seen him at one of these auctions before. Not a single other person showed anything other than a passing interest at all. If he hadn't been there, they would have been mine for $20 or less each. Just high enough to outbid the scrap metal dealers.

Maybe on the projectors, but the same guy also bought several pallets of crt computer monitors and a bunch of pentium II laptops with no batteries or chargers.

Keep in mind that there's still a sh*tload of impulse buyers out there. Heck, I've done it with Roombas, MP3 players, etc. Some people do it because they think they can make a quick buck without doing research in the market, some do it for fun, some do it to waste cash, and some like me do it so their house can be full of crap..
OTOH, maybe the guy did a preinspection and found that the tubes were minty, in which case he got a deal.
Check ebay, if he didn't do his research, they will be there shortly for $900 without any pertinent info in the auction..

Definitely not minty - see my original post.

My ratings estimates may be a bit off due to the crappy flashlight, but there were clearly areas of browning on the tubes. I just looked back at your rating chart and I'm thinking I may have been too optimistic (maybe 5's and 6's, not 6's and 7's). On the bright side, they seemed to have been set up with nice, large rasters on almost the entire tube face.

Sounds like you've had more than a few, "Oooo, it was such a good deal, I couldn't pass it up" moments yourself Chip.

No harder to refund $50 than it is $200.

Oh come on, that's not doing the world a favor, that's doing Curt a favor. There's nothing wrong with pimpin' for Curt though.

The last projector I bought was over a year ago. That was the second 4600 that I bought solely to experiment with so that I wouldn't take a chance on screwing up my main projector. I only paid about the same as someone would for a single 8 rated tube and all three were a 9. Good thing as about 6 months later I launched a green tube in the main unit.
That 4600 is the one that's undergoing a transplant. That one is being fitted with Marquee LC's which requires a complete overhaul of the front end.

I don't buy any CRT PJ stuff anymore either. I bought some G70 parts off of Charles a couple of months ago, but that's all I've bought in 2-3 years.
I have a G70, 4 new tubes and some (not a lot) spare parts in storage. I don't need anything else, especially since I currently don't have a place to set it up. I hope I can get in a situation where I can use it in the next couple of years.
