It'll be several years before we see a reader (let alone a writer) capable of handling the 16 layers. Still, its nice to see them come about. Now, how about those 1TB drives in retail, and the planned for 5-10TB drives by 2010!?!

Buying 500GB drives for <$75 seems like a more robust method, no?

Actually we've been buying 1TB NAS drives (about $270) and using those for daily backups. 500GB HD's for $75 works for a few drives, but it gets pricey if you want to keep any depth in your backups. If they can get BR writers under about $200 and media to a reasonable price, that starts to look pretty attractive.

I'd be real impressed if old players could read it since laser temperature is what determines the layer that can be read, and they probably need a range larger then most originals to read them all.
We probably won't see this in the consumer market anytime soon, unless it gets to some custom multi movie ordering process. It will take a while for the cost of coasters to usable disks catch up with the 2 layer ones.
They could put a lot more useless extra's for the Matrix trilogy if they use 3 of them.

I'd throw 11 of them into a box with an Abit AB9 Pro using its on-board Intel Matrix system for ~4TB at a time, and use the silly PATA for a boot. 
Backing stuff up to optical loses its enticement when you want to retrieve something quickly. Must go through all the junk.
