I just got a update CD from Toshiba for the XA2. It's version 3.0.

Anybody owning a XA2 perform the 3.0 update?

If so, good, bad, ugly???

As part of our commitment to provide world-class service to our customers, Toshiba is supplying this
firmware update for use by purchasers of the applicable models of Toshiba HD DVD Player. This
firmware update covers the following items.
- Addresses certain disc playback and HDMI/DVI related issues identified by Toshiba.

can someone with a true 1080p24 capable display (one that actually takes 1080p24 and displays even multiples of 24) post whether it fixes jaggies or not.

It is fixed mine looks absolutely fabulous now. HD65 and an a-20 1080p/24 tremendous difference. Looks perfect now.

There are too many conflicting reports here regarding the 1080p/24
issue.

I think I will stay away.

2.7 works flawlessly for me.

Agreed, I will not upgrade my XA2.... though it would be nice if someone could give us a definitive answer.

Best news of all 1080p shutdown bug is no more at 1080p which it was terrible with 2.8. I am happy as can be!

Prior to 3.0, were you able to get around the shutdown bug by making sure the player was fully booted up BEFORE switching your receiver to the XA2's input (i.e. boot up before making it do the HDMI handshake)?

There are a number of other improvements.
1080p 60 now actually looks better than 1080p24.
Navigation is much faster plus before there was a lag before the audio would kick in on the swirling hd intro. Now you can actually hear the whole thing!
The whole player seems more stable now.
With 1080p 60 looking so nice i can switch to that for avc encoded movies but I agree 1080p24 should really be fixed.

This sounds very compelling and worth downloading 3.0 if true. Has anyone else had these results??

Seems that my startup/shutdowns are faster now.

I haven't had a fast-forward freeze since updating my XA2 to 3.0, so it looks like it's fixed

Sounding better every minute. Although the benefits are still being debating.... as of yet I have not heard any negatives with installing 3.0.

I've run my XA2 about 7.5 hours straight without the 1080p shutdown bug. I don't know if it's a fluke but in the past, I could not go more than 20 minutes without it happening. I won't feel completely convinced till I get about 75-100 hours without it rearing its ugly head. Maybe 3.0 corrected it.

I can also confirm that the fast forwarding issue is fixed with this version of firmware. I tested a number of standard dvd's and I cannot reproduce the issue any longer.

The last part of the update (5 of 5) takes much longer and it ususally works if you leave it alone.

DO NOT UPGRADE TO THIS 3.0 FIRMWARE!
After much comparison I rolled back to 2.7 which is still far superior in detail color , gray scale and sound!

Updated to 3.0 with no problems, it loaded pretty fast from my new Linksys Dual Band Wireless-N router. Right away noticed that regular DVD's look better than before, much sharper and cleaner. HD-DVD discs also look pretty impressive , and I haven't had a HDMI drop-out, which I used to have on occasion.

Thats what I noticed most is the DVD's look 100% better in color and clarity.

I updated. I don't see any real difference in upconversion of DVD, it looks the same to me.

So here is what we definitely know from member posts thus far about the 3.0 upgrade:

-It solves the shutdown bug
-It does not solve the shutdown bug
-Upconversion of dvds is better
-Upconversion of dvds is not better
-PQ of HD is more vibrant and colorful
-PQ of HD is not affected
-Jaggies are finally removed
-Jaggies have a slight improvement
-Jaggies are still very apparent with zero improvement
-3.0 upgrade does absolutely nothing that can be recognized
-No one should upgrade
-Everyone should rush to upgrade

Did I miss anything??

I think this has been one of the most confusing, least consensus upgrades of any thus far in all HD DVD or Blu ray players.

Clarence,
Thanks for the research and info.

As usual, nothing is easy. I have not had any of the problems that are mentioned like 1080p shutdown, jaggies (or at least that I can see) and the upconversion of sd dvds looks pretty good to me now.

I'll watch the a thread and see what else turns up before loading it in mine.

I wonder why there are inconsistencies in the results?

IMO all of these items are subjective, unless you do a side by side comparison.

-Upconversion of dvds is better
-Upconversion of dvds is not better
-PQ of HD is more vibrant and colorful
-PQ of HD is not affected
-Jaggies are finally removed
-Jaggies have a slight improvement
-Jaggies are still very apparent with zero improvement

This last weekend a A1 had to have the 3.0 update to make the handshake with the older Moome XG DVI. Not sure what it was all about but no problems afterwards. Before the update it would work on a RP HDMI display but not on the Moome. A updated EDID is avail for the card but didnt have time to get one in time and he ordered a HDMI XG already. Moomes sending a updated EDID for it in the order.

Thats all I know about the 3.0. Doug

I agree. I haven't seen any comments on "side-by-side" comparasions.

Right now, I don't have any jaggies, but I don't know if there would be any improvement on standard dvds, or if the picture quality on hd dvd would be better. (That is with my set-up: nec 6pg xtra, vp50 and moome ext box.)

I guess I could always roll back to the older version as I have the disk for that as well. It would be good if I had another pair of eyes looking when I did the upgrade. Confused
