After owning a Sony 12XX series for four years, I have now got my newly aquired G70 finally mounted and running. The 12XXX had only 500 hours and was adjusted for peak performance, the G70 has 5000 hours and the blue and green tubes although not toast are still pretty tired compared to what I had been used to.
After doing mechanical setup I used a calibrator to setup greyscale etc, still not happy with the color balance I went to the primary readings, which were way out, having now adjusted the primary's the picture was mutch better.

I have just returned from a holiday in Penang where you can buy DVD's from the local market stalls for 4 Ringits which is about $1.20 AU so I was not expecting the best quality from these discs.
After playing "The Bucket List" I was absolutly gobsmacked with the detailed image off a cheap disc compared with what I was getting from a BD disc on the 1200 series.

The Focus and image quality from the G70 with the extra focus ability with EM focus is what I have been trying to achieve for years, I am truely impressed.

All I need to know now is how to set G2 on a G70, the 12XXX was easy with the use of a multimeter.

I think G2 is done with the remote most likely in a service menu, And I think its called Bias, a G70 owner would know best.

Kal's Grayscale Calibration for Dummies mentions the different names for RGBLowEnd and RGBhighEnd but despite reading the document several times, I cannot find any mention how they are to be used

I think Bias(G2) is for low level(darker Bars) and Gain(Drive) is for high level(Lighter bars):

I guess what is confusing me is that with the Sony 12XXX series G2 is a precise value = 4v, where with the G70 it is a bit vague other than adjusting bias and gain to where it apears correct

yes the electronics are different for EM tubes not sure f your old set was ES. But the G2 is set in the menu and you use a colorimeter to set greyscale. Not sure if a specific value voltage needs to be set first as I think this is set at the factory. I have a Marquee and we set it with the remote, I d think there is a pot on the neck cards but that is not to be touched , maybe its the same on the G70.

once again a G70 user should help you out more.

G2 adjustment is only available thru the service menu IF you have the old firmware, otherwise Sony (in their wisdom) have locked out that service adjustment. Bias and Gain is where it's at with the newer firmware.

The Bias and Gain are now pretty close to being maxed on the blue and green tubes, although I have a pretty good picture it looks like I will have to replace the blue and green tubes in the near future

Do you have ABG turned on or off?

ABG is turned on at the moment, if I turn it off the picture is too dark
