G'day,

I'm thinking of upgrading (again) and had a look at a 9pg the other night.

http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&Item=220246243976&Category=109890&_trksid=p3907.m29

Its got a few issues that I'm asking if anyone here can help me understand.

1) I turned on the machine, then brought up a test pattern. All that was ok (aside from the astig). The guy has fiddled with the astig controls on the tube and so the 'H' test patten shows a blur (left on Red and right on green!). This I can fix. Now, I plug in a source (a PC) and for a millisecond, I would see the image (as per the PC) and it would dissappear (with a slight click from the PJ). I disconnected the plug (RGB) from the PC and put it back in again and same thing happened. I tried to click the source button on the remote (numbers 1-9) but nothing happened. I pressed the test button and nothing happens until I disconnect the RGB plug from the PC. I disconnected the plug again, selected RGB from the input select and reconnected - no luck. I tried the video jack from a STB, and same thing happened. I even tried to use the remote to set up a new source, but you have to have the source plugged in and press 'OPERATE' button (which won't work whilst the source is connected!). After about 5 minutes, strangely, the source image automagically appeared (with some error message saying its not the right signal) and then everything was fine. Any ideas if its a PJ fault or a user (me!) fault? The current owner has no idea.

2) Without a source, the Test patterns (as looking through the tubes), look reasonably sharp. However, when I add a source, the Test pattern on the Red and Blue are quite blurry. I tried the electronic focus controls, but it only made it blurrier! Do you know what I'm doing wrong? is it a fault with the PJ?

The reason the guy is selling it is because he has a Sony 1272 and he found it easy to configure. He says the 9pg is just too hard! I'm starting to see why!!!

Any thoughts appreciated.

Radar.

Really hard to say on this but to enter a signal you press the 'ADJUST' button then go to signal entry. You can watch what the signal properties are doing from the 'INFO' menu. Look to see if it says separate sync, comp (combined) or sync on green.

I would check to see if you have the syncs on right and not reversed, you can get a quick image sometimes from sync on green.

If it has a video decoder card installed try the video input, I would check to see if it is installed or you wont get anything. A video signal needs to be entered into memory most of the time or it wont show.

Without a signal it doesn't have memory to go to focus or otherwise.

No response from the remote can be a system board issue, check to see if the RC led blinks when pushing a button.

Some oddities can just be the signal entry or from non use. Make sure source lock is off. Doug

Sounds like the caps needed to warm up on the oscillation part of the deflection board.

But unless someone with experience had a play with it, it's really hard to tell.

You need to create a new memory input for your new signal - that's why it's saying "unregistered signal".

It's not much harder than a 1272, and with good tubes, it's far better.

Don't run it without a source, NECs don't like that.

Quick question then on a normal PG9... if I plug in a new source, should I get a picture of some sort.... or will it be completely blank (ie, no picture at all)? Currently its blank.... hence I'm thinking there's something wrong with the PJ.

Something's wrong.

The image should appear straight away, out of convergence. And it should say "unregistered signal".

Press the info button.

"You can watch what the signal properties are doing from the 'INFO' menu. Look to see if it says separate sync, comp (combined) or sync on green."
