I have a sony receiver like this one:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=380036579890&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=025

The dvi looking connector on the back has a different shell shape than the dvi that I'm familiar with. the pin layout looks the same but the corners on this one are wider making the dvi connector not fit. What's the deal?

Interesting. 2000 was right at the beginning of DVI, IIRC. Based on the odd physical shape, and the fact that there's no label on the rear panel, and the fact that the port isn't even mentioned in the manual I found, I'd say it was some sort of Sony-internal diagnostic connector, or it was a very early DVI connector and was included in production specs (before the physical form was refined/defined), and then never enabled in the firmware.

I think some of the computers in our lab have that connector. They have a dongle at end, which splits it into 2 standard DVI ports. I always thought it was a port that allowed dual monitors, but in this case I don't know why that version of the port is there. *edit* actually having looked at this more out of curiosity, I don't think your connector is the same one I saw on the computers.

I think I found your connector here:
