Unless we had a real bad storm on the horizon, I never had much to complain about with directv. SD from my Motorola 6416 has always blown dog. Now I keep having HDMI failures requireing me to re-boot the reciever at least once a day.
It's only the HDMI that fails, S-vid, composite and component work fine. Anyone else ever experiance HDMI drop outs from their Fios/Motorola 6416?

I was thinking about switching to Fios TV service from directTV. Besides the rebooting problem, have you had any other complaints? If this is a common problem I better stay away but otherwise did you think it was worth the switch?

I'm sorry for the OT questions and slightly hijacking your thread. At least it is a free bump! If any else has had these problems, please speak up as I would like to know as well!

Chip,

what's on the other end of that HDMI link? Aside from obvious, like cable/connector problems, which I am sure you eliminated as possible culprits, it looks like some form of HDCP incompatibility (happened before... Toshiba HD-DVD players. anyone? Very Happy ).
I would try inserting in the chain HDMI switch, Receiver, HDMI distribution amp or some other device. It may be able to negotiate more stable connection.
Also, I don't know this particular Box (Motorola), but if it is comparable to Scientific Atlanta receivers (I use SA8300HD), you should be able to find code to get to service menu on it, and at least check for firmware version, maybe update it. Or just request new one from FiOS, on assumption, that it may be defective, and hoping that new one would have newer software.

What "I" would like to know:

Why the hell are "WE" constantly trying to doctor a flawed product? Everyone just puts up with this crap.

Chipper... If you are currently feeding my moome ISS card with that STB then try switching back and forth between ISS slots several times.
I've seen that card lose sync with my SA (3250 IIRC) from Comcast as the ISS cards' power is switched off when focus is switched away from its' slot.

Well I do... As much as I can... Not that it does any good... Sad
In the mean time, we have to deal with the reality as best as we can.
Case in point - HDMI: We ALL know it's ridiculous in concept, design and implementation... Anti-consumer as concept, poorly designed (plugs which fall out from jacks???... WHO the heck came up with this idea?!), and half-a$$-implemented - look at all the troubles people have with HDCP?!
But then we have seen recently, witnessing demise of HD-DVD, how little impact we as consumers have at what CE manufacturers ultimately do...
Its sad...

J, that ISS card is connected to the PS3. I have had to switch away and back many times to gain connection but if it connects it's good for the duration. The Motorola is connected via the HD fury/Box 1020 combination. All I have to do to regain HDMI signal is re-boot. This started on Sat. night when it was smokin hot out. My rack cabinet was running at 96 degrees all day with no problem. It was that night after it cooled off that it happened the first time.

I bet that new Motorola is ROHS compliant. Meaning, no lead solder. That crap is EXTREMELY thermal and vibration sensitive. I would not be surprised that the high temperature swing cracked a solder connection. It's pure sh*t, but we are forced to endure it until they can figure out a better non-lead formulation that doesn't fall off the board.

ROHS causes all kinds of problems... my companies' manufacturing lines are all being upgraded (automated soldering equipment, in our shop mostly for wirelead attachment or mating boards to molded-in terminals.)
Apparently, flow problems in ROHS solder are causing weak joints, poor wicking, cold flow, etc, requiring all the vision inspection systems be upgraded to be able to 'see' these kind of problems.
