I'm thinking of legally downloading (buying) some mp3s for myself and my daughter.
Does anyone have any recommendations?
I have multiple mp3 players, so I would want to be able to put it on more than one player.

Amazon, emusic, Napster and Walmart are all selling some music as DRM-free MP3's, now. Take your pick.
You can also buy Apple's iTunes plus tracks for $.99, which are 256kbps AAC - very high quality compared to the lower-bitrate mp3 that's typical fare. You could then either burn red-book CDs to archive (and re-rip to whatever format you want), or just convert right in iTunes.
Lots of options.

I looked at Walmart and saw that their downloads (at least that I was interested in) were 256K.
I don't have an iPod, so I don't know that I'm interested in iTunes. I looked at Amazon as well, but nothing told me what the bitrates were.
I guess I'll just give one or two of them a try and see what works best for me

You don't have to have an iPod to use iTunes. It's free, it's a great player, the selection is excellent from the iTunes store, and most importantly, the 256kbps AAC iTunes Plus files are far superior sound-quality wise to even a 256kbps MP3 file. Of course, you'll have to convert to make MP3's, but that's easy enough. At least your CD's will sound better. Plus, you're all ready to rock and roll when you DO get an iPod.

I got my PocketDish players for free, so no iPod plans for me
That and the fact that these blow the iPods away when it come to video. Although I do find the idea of a smaller flash based player somewhat appealing at times.

Better stay away from Person99, who knows that using a PC instead of a CD player is only good for stealing!
I wouldn't use iTunes, though. I grabbed it once when I used it to snag some samples for this remix thing Radiohead was doing, and while the process was easy enough, iTunes was an insane memory/resource hog (at least on PC) and it has a nasty habit of trying to install other apple stuff (Quicktime, Safari) in the guise of 'updates'. I wouldn't recommend it.

Has anyone here ever has iTunes hose an MP3 collections? It happened to a friend of mine. He got an iPos Nano and when he installed iTunes it went and renamed all his song's to the wrong names.
