i HATE microsoft!!!! i know curt can fix it and if i had the 100 bucks he would be fixing it. i got laid off from work a few weeks ago and just dont have the spare cash laying around. but the funny thing is, the rep at microsoft tried to tell me that my warranty ran out in march, since it was only a one year warranty. and i said "see thats the thing, this is such a problem that you guys had to extend the warranty on these things to 3 years because its so bad. Therefor my warranty is good until next march" Wink

so in your face microsoft lol. anyways now i get to play the wait game Sad

Yeah I'm curious if Rasheed finally asked a supervisor too. As long as you didn't break the security seal, it still has a couple years left on the warranty.

Mine has already been in once for replacement. They just send another one back. Now it's starting to lag and lock up when hot. Sooooooooo....I get to talk to India again. YAY! Twisted Evil

(I love F-ing with those guys!) This time I'm going to pitch a bigger fit and try for an Elite. I think under the consumer protection laws of my state however I may have to go through the replacement process one more time before that may work....I'll have to check into it.

I wouldn't try to fix it yourself. I'm not saying you're not capable, but 'fixing it' isn't a for sure 100% every time procedure. Worst case scenario, you're REALLY screwed if it doesn't work.

It appears that multiple failures are common on the old boxes. I am about to post a solution for people that use me for services, so they can re-repair the boxes themselves. I've made it so that as long as you have a Torx driver, you can reseat the chips and heatsinks yourself.

I know a lot of repair guys have dropped out of the market, as short of machining a new larger heatsink, re-repairs are going to be required. Seems a bunch of MS repaired boxes are going down as well. The newer boxes have larger heatsinks, but once the RROD happens once, it will keep reoccuring, as the separation of the main chips and board has already occurred. Iv'e done maybe 30 boxes now, have had at least 1/2 of them come back. I'm still doing them, but with the above disclaimer up front. At least I'll have the article on the site showing how you can redo the repair yourself.

There are mods that can be done to the ducting too. Nothing more than plastic rectangles inserted to divert more air to the processor as opposed to the GPU but temp verification proved it worked. Then there's fan replacement and modifications.....Shouldn't have to go through all that sh*t to make something perform it's base advertised function tho IMO.
From what I've been able to gather, the final step after the repair mod for RROD is to unplug the DVD drive and the fans and turn it on for about 2-2.5 minutes until it overheats and the solder reflows. Then there's the scary towel over the heat sink thing to accomplish the same. Shocked

I already purchased a couple repair kits on fleabay to fix an RROD console I 'won' but the thing showed looking NOTHING like it did in the pix. It looked like it had been run over so I sent it back and got a refund. That leaves me with the repair kits for the day the extended warranty expires on mine.

I'll see if I can't find the YouTube vid again Curt. I'm sure you don't need it but it may prove entertaining anyway.

Thanks, I do fan mods and redirecting of the airflow. I haven't measured chop temperature, but the exhaust air is cold. I put the fans on full speed, but eventually the chips come loose again. I even built a controller that randomly pushes buttons to simulate game play, but even that doesn't cause the units to fail any earlier than with real game play.

A friend of mine is already on his forth unit so far. He bought it from Costco and the replacement plan is working for him--too bad the Xbox isn't.

I dont have one of these but if its a heat problem for the cpu I know there is a cooling chip you could add on top of the heat sink or directlly to the chip. one side gets Ice cold the other side gets hot. So you would put the cold side to the chip needing cooling ans maybe add the heat sink to the hot side along with maybe an exhaust duct if its needed. I do not remeber the name of the chip, i saw it in a ebay sellers store where I got some of my parts. They are used in cars for heated/cooling cup holders and run on 12 volt supply.

Thats a Peltier Diode.
but the problem is the video accelerator chip. there is no place to mount the device because its stuck under the DVD drive. if you have your xbox360 open "before" the failure at a preventive measure. simply putting the duct partition and mod the fan to be on all the time will probably be sufficient.
If your warrantee has expired, i highly recommend this preventive measure.

are you sure you did Ball Grid Array? this is a LARGE one. you'll need a temp controlled oven to ramp up the heat in a very controlled fashion.

I know this is an old thread, but after countless attempts to repair my old 360, xclamp mod, fan mod, etc...

This heatgun method finally fixed it!

I've played it about 5 nights now for over 2 hours each time. I also did a 12v fan mod on the gpu fan and the 360 sounds like a jet engine but when I feel the back it's way cooler.
