My AmPro 4600 sarted having some issues with HVPS restarts. Then they cleared up after taking it apart and resoldering some things and putting a small fan on the side of it.

Then it started to act really weird. After about 2 -3 minutes after turning it on it would turn blurry for a bit then go black and then instantly come back on clear. It would do this a few times and would be perfect for the rest of the night, even if it was 5-6 hours. The HVPS restart counter did not go up. A couple of days ago it started to turn blurry and change size. It would shrink in about 6 to 10 inches all the way around and pulse small and large for a bit then black out. It done that for about 5 minutes then worked right. Last night when I turned it on it would start to show the image and go straight into a HVPS restart. It would do that for about 3 or 4 times and then turn off. I tried several times and it just would not fire up.

I put in the HVPS from my backup 4600 after swapping my little fan over and it is running fine.

Does anyone have any ideas as to how I might be able to fix it so I will have a backup again?

By the way this is the FIRST AmPro HVPS failure that I have had. And I have been running AmPros for about 8 years now.

Check all solder joints on the sub board and the module contacts. Could be internal HV arcing though, in which case it's toast.

My AmPros have given me a LOT less headaches than the few Barcos that I have Had. The 3600 that I sold my sister has worked flawless. It does not even need a touch up but about once every 6 months.

You know, when the picture gets small that means the HV is increasing in voltage. Not a good thing. Spellmans usually have overly sensitive overvoltage circuits, that's why all the HV restarts. Probably best to not use that supply until you can get it fixed.

Old projector story. Once, Ampro was looking for an alternative to the Spellman power supply and got a prototype from another company. I put it in a unit, connected everything up and turned it on. Fffffft, it came up. Ok, cool. About 15 seconds later the picture got real small and intense looking. Whoa! Before I could turn it off, BAMMMM! The HV arced THROUGH the glass of one of the tube necks to the grounded clamp on the focus magnet. Yeehaw! We didn't buy any of those.

Be careful.

Scott

You mean you actually found a power supply worse than a Spellman? And to think, most people didn't think that was possible. Mr. Green Mr. Green Mr. Green

Hey wingnut, I mean XANATOS, Please enlighten us as to how much AmPro exreriance you have, especially with a 4600?
For the record, I'm on my second Focus board, second HVPS AND my second set of tubes. I bought it with 2,200 hours on it and now it has over 16,000 hours on the clock. You my friend are F*****g clueless Laughing

You have been listening to, to many meatheads complain about a projector that they've never seen. Curt has even stated many times that the X600 series does NOT suffer the problems of the older series AmPro's but alas, it falls on deaf ears.

I suppose I should thank people like you for the drivel you spew. It keeps the prices down to a point where I can buy 3 cherry 4600's for the price of 1 5,000hr G-90. So I will,

THANK YOU XANATOS for keeping the price of my projectors and their parts dirt cheap. Laughing Laughing Laughing

The odd thing is that the supply is not overvoltaging when the output goes high. The overvoltage circuit is very sensitive and seldom misses an opportunity to shut off the output. The OV circuit has its own parts that are seperate from the output regulation circuits. One thing that might cause the output to rise without causing OV is the "overdrive" system. Maybe it is partially turning on?
