Guys,

My G70 was running fine this afternoon when it "popped" and shut down, it was in pic mute when it died.

I checked the power in and it is steady around 120v so no problems there, the projector doesn't power on and the remote, error display remain blank. I smelled a electrical burning from the power supply card cage so I began to pull boards. I found the following problems:

FA board:

R177 got hot

FAB board:

It looks like some of the traces? got hot but I'm not sure (C2012, C2103)

GA board:

Some small spots of corrosion but nothing that looks like recent damage

I didn't see damage on any of the other power supply boards and didn't want to dig deeper yet.

I also checked the fuse and it looks like it is OK.

Advice? Crying or Very sad

Erik

the "pop" you heard could well be a cap that has blown, if it was a resistor it would have just burned with lots of smoke. look for any Electrolytics that may be bulging or tants that look burnt, its usually one of that type i have not come across burnt maylar or ceramic yet so not sure what to look for with those types. just use your nose to find it.

Thanks for the quick reply,

I'm very illiterate when it comes to electronics so my troubleshooting will likely be limited to finding burnt smelling things and sending them off to Curt Wink

Now for stupid question time. A cap is the one that looks like a soda can with two wires coming out of the bottom and a resistor is the one with the colored stripes and a wire coming out of both ends right.

If so than it looks like I don't have any bad or leaky caps but have found one bad resistor so far.

I had the same thing happen, sudden shut down and burnt smell.Check the GB board in the power supply area, pull it and see if the smell is coming from it. This is how I found mine. Hopefully your tubes are still OK? Sad
I'll try and post a pic tonight of where mine failed. IT was a resistor next to a large cap and it burned away completely.

I checked the green tube and it was untouched Very Happy

I'll check the other two, but I'm guess they are fine too.

My GB board looked Ok, but if you could post a picture that would be great it would give me something to look for and check.

Does anyone have any idea what may have caused this failure?

Yes, the set is 10 years old. Failures are bound to happen..Very Happy

Seriously, while these things are built like tanks, you can't find anything electronic out there that lasts 10 years without something failing. Look at anything new, that margin goes down to 3 years. Sad but true.

I'll bet nothing 'caused' it to happen, it is just normal wear and tear.

Curt,

How much would it cost me to send the boards up to you to get them tested and repaired. Also if you're interested I have a Sony SDI input card and a tested line doubler card that I'd be willing to trade for some repairs.

Thanks,

Erik

I've got no real need for the SDI card, but I do for the doubler, shoot me an email to curtpalme@shaw.ca

Thanks!

Sounds Good,

If you're not intersted in the SDI card I'll list it in the buy/sell section of the forum. My guess is it will only be useful to someone who wants to stick it in a switcher to use with a SDI dvd player

It's stupid question time again, I'm pulling the boards to send to Curt and for the life of me I can't figure out how to disconnect the F board. Do the two cables pull off of the Board or do they disconnect on the other end? I don't want to pull any harder on them than I have already for fear of damaging the board.

Pull it out part way, then unplug the single pin connectors. If one pulls off the board, no big deal, take it out of the connector end with pliers and tape it to the bottom of the board and I'll resolder it..Smile

Sorry Dan,

Curt decided he wanted it so I'm sending it and the line doubler up to him in exchange for the board repairs.

However he didn't sound like he really needed it so you may be able to buy it off of him.
