trying to help a friend pick-out and buy a PJ that's semi-local to him and supposed to be in good shape with clean tubes, etc. The pics look really bad though and I have never seen rust before inside a CRT chassis. Any thoughts or comments on this, not sure what to tell him. It's a 4 hour drive to "check it out".

Wow..rust...but still have the lense caps...how weird. At $4.00/gallon for 4 hours take a car that gets decent mileage that you can fit it in. I hope its cheap, I think I would ask for a shot of the tubes before making a trip.

Is that a G70 VR?

If the price was right I would drive four hours just for those lenses!

If it was two hours there and two back, I'd be there in an instant. Four+four just to check it out, without tube shots and at least a claim of powerup, would be pushing it pretty hard.

There's heavy corrosion in the chassis, either leaked glycol (very bad/fatal damage), or it has been stored in a damp place for an extended period of time (in many cases actually not a problem at all).

I've now had 2 NECs in that had heavy corrosion on the steel chassis and all steel parts, but otherwise fired up perfectly and ran perfectly stable as well. From just looking at them you would have thought they'd be junk Smile
I was kind of shocked when I got the first one. I only checked the exterior at the sellers, and that it fired up (price was too good to delve deeper into it). At home I opened the lid, and everything was corroded.
Fortunately all of the boards were pristine, with not a hint of corrosion on them. I let the unit run for 2x 48 hours, and everything was fine.

Btw, looking at your pics the white residue that leaked out looks like it is from spilled glycol.

That looks EXACTLY like the VR that I used to own. If it is, the rust is ashame but the tubes were MINTY and purchased brand new from Sony so I seriously doubt any glycol leaks.

Just one month in a cold midwest garage in the early spring could have easily done that. Cold at night - chassis get cold. Then, it warms up outside in the morning and humidity shoots up. The garage door opens, warmer humid air rolls in and hits the cold chassis and bam! Massive condensation. With condensation like that, it wouldn't take long to look like it does. Any 'damage' could just be cosmetic. It definitely needs some TLC, but if the tubes are in good shape, it would sure be worth a drive if the price was right.

The white stuff could just be aluminum salts, too. There's a bunch of anodized aluminum on the bottom of the machine. If it sat on concrete, it could have corroded some of the aluminum and left some salts behind.

it is your old machine but it loks like it hasn't been taken care of since you sold it.

well lets hope your right but I guess a Phillips screwdriver will quickly reveal if all the Glycol stayed in the tubes or not.

IT's actually 12 hours round trip not eight. Sad I hope the seller is willing to take those lenses off and see for sure whether any Glycol leaked. If not, hopefully someone here is nearby and can do that?
