Is it best to use the projector's internal test pattern's or external test pattern's to centre the image on screen when mechanicaly centering the tubes?

Aim to centre your external source as that's what you'll be using when you watch.

I'm with Gino. Play the proper calibration disc using the proper test patterns with the source you will be using.

One thing you have to remember here is the test pattern from a external source typically does not fill the whole raster. You should raise the brightness control enough to show the whole raster and center your external signal within the raster.
You then move the raster around to center the image. The full raster should not touch the edge of the tube. Some will argue that it's OK to go beond the tubes edge with the raster as long as the image does not. However, if something fails in the G2 circuit or the raster is elevated for any reason, the energy from the beam striking the edge and beond can cause the tube to crack. That's my opinion and I'm shhhhhhhticking to it.
Oh BTW, you never use adjustments to center the image on the screen. You center the image on the tube face and point the projector accordingly.
