...I'm starting to regret hanging my 808s without painting it. The cover, obviously, is no problem - I'm planning on doing a sanding and matte black or similar.
But now the thing's on the ceiling, and I don't know if it's possible to get the rest of the plastic off, or mask things somehow, so I can paint the rest of it. Any ideas?

If you are going to paint it try using paint for car plastic bumpers, you can get it in grey or black. I just painted the dark grey parts on my G70. It is made to go on plastic and is flexible, I provides a low sheen near matt finish wil the same texture as the original.
A gloss finish might result in getting reflections back from the screen.

Also if you want it really stuck. Use adhision promoter for plastic car bumpers.

The real problem is how to paint the bits that are up on the ceiling with the projector - either to find some way to paint/colorize them while it's up, or to take them off without taking the PJ down or ripping it all apart.

Where there is a will there is a way. Go get one of those tiny trim roller sets from Home Depot, Lowes, Wal-Mart etc. They are only about inch thick and two inches wide and roll it on. If it's too tight to get your hand in there, duct tape the handle on the little roller to any stick you can find - paint stirrer, etc. for an extension.

Take the top cover off and paint it outside of the main house as the smell of solvent based paints will drive you out of the house. You'll use most of the paint on that part. News paper and masking tape to cover what you don't want paint to get on. Then spray only what you can see for now. If it has to come down for some reason later, you can do the bottom correctly then. If you have a window in that room use a window or box fan blowing out to keep the smell down in the rest of the house. Drop-cloth everything in the room. Overspray will get on everything. If you were even thinking of painting it, you should'a done it before ya hung it

The sides from a 808 can be removed by unscrewing four screws on each side, and the sides will come right off. Remove them outward from the top as if they were 'hinged' from the bottom. (When ceiling mount) The sides are held by plastic fingers into the chassis on the bottom.

Awesome. I was going to poke around in there but was reluctant without knowing what was going on, since you often have to know what's going on in there or you break some tabs off somewhere. Thanks!
