It's hard to look at the tomato meter all by itself. What you need to do is look at a smaller personal sample of reviewers you typically agree with.

The problem is some of the reviewers have certain personal biases against styles, directors, actors - even whole genres. Objectivity just isn't always the name of the game for some of them.

All that said, I haven't seen Riddick even Pitch Black - they're on the list. The wife doesn't like sci-fi like I do, so I don't get many opportunities to partake in certain films.

The general rating includes a bunch of fairly obscure critics that are from movie websites, etc. I don't really care what those guys think. I always go by the consensus of the "cream of the crop". These are professional, well known critics. Unfortunately, they rated Riddick even lower than the general rating: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/chronicles_of_riddick/?critic=creamcrop

Personally, I don't think was a bad movie, but I certainly don't think it was a good one. I thought the "look" of the movie was good, but didn't really care for anything else about it.

Well, all a matter of taste. For me, 29 % nails it pretty well. Maybe a bit to high Wink
Though I really like Pitch Black!

Analog,

Yes, everyone has different taste. You like what you like. It's not a conscience decision. You either like it or you don't. No right or wrong.

Daniel,

I don't really remember Pitch Black, but I don't think I liked it either. It did get much better revues, although it still rated average: http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/pitch_black/

Phil,

what i liked about Pitch Black was that it told it's little story, without any bigger picture. There were some characters that dealt with a situation. And then the movie was over Smile
Now 'chronicles' comes along and introduces a whole universe - and fails, imo, badly. But, hey, the picture quality is awesome Smile

Although I own it and use it sometimes to demo, but any measure of the art, this is NOT a good movie. I'd say that rating was pretty accurate.

Daniel,

I remember very little about it. Only a few bits and pieces. Maybe I need to watch it again.

I truly don't do it very often.

I had a bunch of movies ripped on hard drives that I had seen and enjoyed. I decided last summer that I would quit renting for a while and watch all these movies I had been saving. Out of 40 or 50, I enjoyed 1 or 2. For whatever reason, I rarely enjoy watching movies I've already seen.

I might enjoy Pitch Black because I can't really remember it. It would be like watching it for the first time.

I guess I'm just an SF slut, or something like that. I just love movies that are set in alternate realities, and seeing how that world plays out. TCoR was clearly B-movie schlock, but I still enjoyed it. Smile I'd happily watch it again.

Pitch Black was different. It was more of a small, finely-honed story. They were concentrating on making it stand on its own merits instead of trying to suck life out of a previous success. It's a bad comparison but I'd say Pitch Black is more like Alien, and TCoR was more like AvP or another of those later Alien rip-offs.
