In the crt primer it mentions that the sd187 tubes (the ones used in both my projectors) only have a usable 5.5"
worth of phosphor - Is this because of the frame you can see looking through the lenses, if so, does that mean I can allow the
raster to be a fair bit larger ? (projecting over this frame)

It's a bit of BS that every manufacturer used. Measure any CRT tube, and you'll see that none of them come close to the phosphor area that they claim.
No, don't overshoot the active phosphor surface, you can implode the tube.

Maybe we can start a class action suit and get some new tubes out of them! False advertising! Just enough to supply all of the 8" and 9" folks around here.
