A couple of week's ago I set my G/F up with a projector. Now I want to add OTA and QUAM tunning to it. Who make's a good tuner that has RGBHV/VGA out put that I can plug into the PC1271 swirtcher?

I was looking at this one PHDV ATSC/QAM tuner. Anyone have one? Good or bad?

What is everybody running for an OTA/digital cable tuner?

Watching this thread with great interest...
There is a Samsung (I think) 4600A hotel-style tuner that MUST have an IR remote receiver to work that typically go for $25-$50 on eBay. These require a remote-hack and other fiddling but are otherwise reported as being viable... I've not pulled the trigger for want of time.

You can find older DirecTV/ATSC tuners on ebay or craigslist real cheap. I bought a Samsung SIR-TS360 a few years ago for around $50 including shipping, then used a VGA to 5BNC breakout to hook it up my scaler. The scaler passes the 720p or 1080i signal through, works great...

I cannot say how it's sensitivity compares with other models - I've also heard that the Sony DirecTV/ATSC tuners work very well. I can say that I am around 50 miles from the antenna farms in Cedar Hill (where everyone in the Dallas/Fort Worth area has their broadcast towers), and I get excellent reception on all hidef channels. I do use a huge ChannelMaster outside antenna, and I am out in the country, with nothing between me and the towers.

Thanks, Brad. That sounds like ideal conditions.

I use an RCA DTC-100, it must be a first or second generation tuner but works well. My PC tuner card pulls in a signal better, but not by much and I working with 45-70 mile stations. The Samsung also has other inputs that will output scaled to 720 or 1080 RGBHV.

Don't go with a RCA DTC 210. It works great, but it has to be hooked up to the dish once a day and the reset button pushed or it will not work. My new H20 works well with the new Direct TV HD channels, but macro blocks at times with the old ones and with OTA. I have a two position switch for the dish so I can re boot the DTC 210 when I am going to use it for OTA.

I actually have the TS360, but did not mention it since its' not QAM.
Its' ATSC output looks very good (had to use it as my primary receiver a couple times when cable went out during football games, and my guests commented that OTA looked better than cable.)

In my environment it pulls too few channels for my taste... 30 - 45 miles with no Texas line-of-sight! I'm in SE Massachusetts and there are plenty of hills between me and the towers in the highlands west of Boston.

What are the odds that these subsidized $40 OTA receivers also have QAM? Wink

The subsidized tuner's? I'd say slim and none. I was at Radio Shack a while back. They had on their rack a digital tuner, cheap, however it only offered SD output's, S-video, composite and RF on ch 3 or 4. I guess that cater's to the lowest commond J6P type.

The $49.00 model at WallyWorld has only RF and composite out.. not even S-Video. And 2 ch audio.

Yep. That'll get most people up and running.

Just as an aside. The worst thing I ever did at my Mom's house was to hook her VCR up via Composite. She kept calling me and telling me her TV was on CH 3. Why couldn't she see the video?

Gotta keep it somple for alot of people.

I used a DTC-100, It did not need to be connected to DirectTV, it worked great with my BG800. There is one on Ebay that closes in a few hours. It even had a horiz. centering adjustment (Disclaimer: This was 7 year ago they may have changed the firmware since then).
