Ok,

The PS3 is on the way, just waiting on Moome...

I hear all the talk about frame rates etc..

I have the same PJ as Kal, and just am wondering what the best output format to set the PS3 @ and what to have the DVDO VP50 output at?

I can either let the VP50 passthru the 1080p or scale 1080i to 1080p. The newest firmware will just bypass it if selected.

Ideas?

Can you feed the DVDO a native 1080p/24 signal and let it interlace it to 1080i/72 or 1080i/96? That's what I'd do if the VP50 supports it. I prefer my Zenith 1200 at 1080i instead of 1080p.

If it doesn't, then you could try comparing this:

PS3 1080i/60 out -> HDMI cable -> EXT-HD -> RGBHV cable -> projector

with:

PS3 1080p/24 out -> HDMI cable -> VP50 1080i/60 out -> HDMI cable -> EXT-HD -> RGBHV cable -> projector

And see which looks better.

Assuming the vP50 has HDMI in/out.

IF you want to use 1080p on the projector, don't let the PS3 interlace the native 1080p signal only to have the VP50 de-interlace it! Send 1080p out from the PS3.

Kal

What Kal said.

1080i looks a bit sharper on these machines than 1080p. The downside of 1080p is the you have to do 48 or 60. 48 looks better but may flicker too much for you. 60 has the judder.

You want to feed the VP50 1080p/24--period. Then compare the output at these to see which you like the best:
1080p/48
1080i/96
1080i/72

IMO, 1080i/96 looks the best on our machines. The Lumagen's can do this, and I think the VP50 can, but I'm not sure. Since you have never likely run any of these resolutions, you are going to have to calibrate each one you try.
