Chip,

The second field should probably be only your username. So this should probably work:

1. smtp.aol.com (that's the server)
2. stefuel (that's the username on the server)
3. stefuel@aol.com (that's the destination email address)

I just thought of another thing... If AOL's smtp server requires authentication (and the APC software doesn't give you a place to put in a password), you might be up the creek to use the AOL SMTP server.

As soon as you know it works, delete your post and I'll delete mine so the spambots don't get your email address.

AOL email is IMAP protocol-based, it will not work in this configuration. (Unless they added this service recently, I don't know, I try to avoid them like plague Very Happy

Who do you use as your net access provider? (Hope you have broadband, NOT AOL dial-up? ) Smile

If you have broadband, you DO HAVE regular (POP3) email account, even if you never used it till now.
They always set one up as part of service.
Find out from them, what are their servers, and your user name (usually same as the one you use to log-in to their customer's support web site). They are usually something like mail.optonline.net (both SMTP and POP3) for Cablevision Optimum customers, mail.verizon.net for FIOS users and so on. If you are on their network (using their modem) usually you don't need password to get to SMTP (outgoing) server.

OK I have another issue that just popped up I installed APC's Power Chute software to test the operation of a giant UPS that I bought and to test my home brewed serial cable. Everything works great. I was finishing up some Crestron programming and when I went to up-load the program I got a notice that Com 1 was unavailable. I assume Power Chute snagged it. I only have 1 com port. Is there a way to toggle it away from Power Chute so that I can upload my program or will I have to uninstall the Power Chute program? Thanks,

You can try bringing up task manager and see if power chute is running under processes. If it is highlight it and then end process. Now see if com 1 is available.

As for serial port, I can see couple of options (aside from what macgyver655 said, which should work on incident by incident basis).
First, check if the UPS has USB connector by any chance? Many newer ones do... If it doesn't, you can try Serial-USB converter, (they are available and would run you ~$15.00 or so). Problem is, that's hit-n-miss proposition, lots of time they don't work properly, so maybe get one you can return...
Ideal solution is to just add connector for 2nd serial port. Your motherboard almost for sure has header for it (connector is standardized, so no problem there), and you can get connector itself in any decent comp. store for few $. It wold replace one of slot covers for expansion cards on the back of the unit, and would not interfere with other hardware. You would have to check, and possibly enable it in BIOS (technique is dependent on Motherboard/BIOS manufacturer, check manual).
