Anyone ever tried D-VHS to 3x DVD? I know jack about D-VHS. I see that Fight Club is out on D-VHS and I have a friend who would sh*t himself if he could see it in HD. I know, just play it off a D-VHS deck. But I think it would be very comical to have a dead format playing on a dead format. That and it would be nice to get a D-VHS player, dump the titles to 3x DVD, then sell the player. Sure, it would take a couple of dual/double layer DVDs for most movies. Hey, nothing wrong with an intermission. I remember needing to flip Se7en on DVD half way though. Ha! Maybe this is pie in the sky and I should just wait for Fight Club on Blu-ray.

Yep, the D-Theater tapes are encrypted. Even if they weren't, it probably wouldn't be worth all the time it would take to make it work. Depending on the player you have, it's a lot of screwing around getting a disc burnt that doesn't skip at the beginning, end or all the way through. The thread at AVS on doing this is MASSIVE and there are a lot of people who have a whole lot of trouble doing it. The newer players are definitely more problematic.
I've had good success burning my DirecTV HD streams onto discs to play back on the A1/XA1, but I haven't tried any of the newer gen of player - which are the players that lots of guys have all sorts of trouble making work right.
What HD player do you have? I have a copy of Fight Club in OAR I captured from Showtime HD off DirecTV. It's not D-VHS, but it looks pretty nice for 'HD Lite'.

D-VHS is not for the faint of heart. But, it is still the best option for many uses. You could not pry my D-VHS machines from my hand. I have good HD (not HD lite) versions of The Incredibles, all 6 Star Wars movies, all 4 Alien movies, Madagascar, etc. Not many people have this. Nope, you couldn't get my D-VHS away from me!
By the way, you did figure out correctly that no one has hacked 5C, so you can't copy the tapes.

I have a JVC D-Theater
Is there a way to transcode RGB, Component, or HDMI outputs to Firewire inputs on the JVC?
I'd like to use the ol' machine to keep copies of some of my HD-DVR recorded movies.

Not really. What comes over the firewire is the encoded MPEG2 stream. Even HDMI which is digital, is not the same, but the decoded MPEG2 stream. So, the only way to do it would be an HD Capture card which then encoded the stream as MPEG2. If the card is not HDMI, then there will be some loss of data. I do not believe there is an HDMI capture card that will let you do this (HDCP will get in the way), and I don't think processors are fast enough yet to encode the analog stream on the fly.
