just found this in my mail-box, if they do cancel all HD-DVD's I will be canceling my service Mad

Quote:
We're Going Blu-ray

Dear Dragan,

You're receiving this email because you have asked to receive high-definition movies in the HD DVD format. As you may have heard, most of the major movie studios have recently decided to release their high-definition movies exclusively in the Blu-ray format. In order to provide the best selection of high-definition titles for our members, we have decided to go exclusively with Blu-ray as well.

While we will continue to make our current selection of HD DVD titles available to you for the next several months, we will not be adding additional HD DVD titles or reordering replacements.

Toward the end of February, HD DVDs in your Saved Queue will automatically be changed to standard definition DVDs. Then toward the end of this year, all HD DVDs in your Queue will be changed to standard definition DVDs. Don't worry, we will contact you before this happens.

You can click here to change your format preferences.

We're sorry for any inconvenience. If you have any questions or need further assistance, please call us at 1 (888) 638-3549.

Dave,

See this thread:
Netflix says chooses Blu-ray format over HD DVD

I already suspended my Netflix account for 90 days. I'm going to see whether I miss it before I decide whether to turn it back on or dump it altogether.

SC

PS - For the record, your thread title is much better than the other.

This is just crazy and is bound to alienate a lot of Netflix customers. There are still several major labels that are still HD-DVD exclusive, but perhaps Netflix knows something we don't. There has been much talk in the last year of the demise of HD-DVD in favor of Blu-ray and this will be one more nail in the coffin. If more studios jump ship then HD-DVD will go the way of Betamax. If it helps to improve Netflix's HD media service then I'm for it. More than 3/4 of my 'long wait' or 'very long wait' HD disks are BR and I've been waiting for some of these for over 3 months!!! Evil or Very Mad
Maybe time to sell my XA2 while they might be worth something Laughing

Your XA2 is probably already worth so little, you may as well keep it as a DVD player (if nothing else).

I had an A1 to sell, and even last fall it was already worth so little, it wasn't worth selling. I don't think it's worth $75 now.

that's why I had the laughing face. HD-DVD players have depreciated as fast as computers. I'm glad I bought 2nd hand and not the premium prices when they first appeared on the market...doesn't hurt so much.

I just looked on ebay. New and used, they're selling from $70 to as low as $40. I paid $400 for mine...

But hey, we knew this could happen. Obviously we didn't think it would, or we wouldn't have gone with HD-DVD, but we knew it was possible. It's the price of early adoption. I really don't think it's something to get upset about. For buying a player early and not waiting for the outcome of the format war, you only have yourself to blame.

My freebie HD-DVDs have 2 hrs to go on ebay. I sold 4 of them, and I hope to clear $40 on 'em. That will mean I'll have about $60 invested in the HD-A2, and a couple of disks. Bummer, but it won't kill me. Though I *WAS* intending to sign up with Netflix to rent. How long until Blockbuster Online dumps HD-DVD? *sigh*

Hmmmm. That doesn't bode well for Xbox 360 owners either. I 'early adopted' the HD drive for my 360 and it's looking like it'll be relegated to playing movies from the cutout bin at the carwash.

I hope Microsux offers rebates for replacement BD external drives for owners with proof of purchase. Confused That'll be an awkward negotiation process now won't it. Laughing
If I were Microsoft I'd have been quietly gearing up to release BD players for the 360 just in case HDDVD didn't make it.

Hey, I'm not complaining. I absolutely knew this could happen. I paid $350 for my A1, and I don't regret it all. I've watched a ton of HD DVD movies. We've had people over for movie nights, I've done kick-ass demos...

Hell, I bet if I took what I spent on the HD DVD player and movies, and divided it by all the movies we've watched and the number of people we've had watch with us, it would probably still be less than what we'd spent on movie tickets at the theater - and for that we'd have absolutely nothing to show for it. As it is, I have an excellent little collection of HD movies and an awesome upscaling DVD player to play the hundreds of DVD's I have in my collection (that are also not worth selling).

it's not the cost of the player, my player was a gift from the local CRT club. It's the fact that Netflix has the stones to tell me I have to buy a f*cking Sony product if I want to watch hi-def movies. f*ck them, the minute they do this I will be done with them.
"HD DVDs in your Saved Queue will automatically be changed to standard definition DVDs. Then toward the end of this year, all HD DVDs in your Queue will be changed to standard definition DVDs."
As much as I hate the thought, I will going back to Nutbuster Video and the minute they pull the same crap they can go screw themselves too.

You go, Draganm!

Seriously, I agree. WTF do they think they need to 'switch' right now? I can think of no legitimate business reason for this. This was purely a political move. It was a case of, "Well, we might as well switch and do our part to get this thing over with." In other words, they picked sides.

I can't wait to see when/if Universal and Paramount finally make the switch and HD DVD is gone, whether Sony will start to turn the screws to make more money on the format. I mean, BD mastering and replication was ALREADY more expensive than the same for HD DVD, and that was when Sony was in "come on in, the water is great" mode. Imagine what it will be like once they're in "Where you gonna go now, suckers?" mode?

Ooops! Sorry, guys. I know that. I'm just so used to Dave's anti-Sony/anti-BD position, I naturally attributed the comment in my mind to Dave instead of Draganm - whose name I still don't know, I don't think.

Let's see... a big, juicy, steaming log would be nice.

Do you know this? I have no idea how the rental business really works, but I imagine that there are costs involved in carrying a title, and if those titles aren't moving, or they are projecting that they will not be moving in the future, then it wouldn't make sense to invest further capital in them.... *shrug*

Of course, it could certainly also be that someone got a check.

Why not a check?...Warner got $500 million to convert. Twisted Evil I'm sure NetDix whored themselves for alot less.

Sony's all in on this one to whatever lengths are necessary to force the mass 'adoption' of their flawed and unfinished format. They're prepared to wire money anywhere in the world at a moments notice. Rolling Eyes

As an aside to this off topic aside, think of all the PC's and laptops out there with HD-DVD drives in them. Certainly Toshiba's, but also HP, ACER, Samsung, and a slew of lesser known 'Pick your configuration' type builders. That's a mess waiting to happen too.

Life will go on if BD becomes King but goddamn I hate Sony.

I agree. They didn't do it just to piss draganm and SC off (although they certainly succeeded in doing so), or all their other HD-DVD customers. And I'm sure they know they will lose some disgruntled customers because of it. So there HAD to be a reason for it. Either rental volume didn't justify maintaining a HD-DVD inventory, Sony provided an incentive, the future didn't look bright enough to justify further investment, etc.

The loss of revenue from the draganms and SCs must be worth it for some reason, or they wouldn't have done it.

Blu-Ray won. Get with the program already.

And the sooner HD-DVD is completely extinct, the happier I'll be. Because I saw Blu-Ray as the better choice from the start,
and when it came time to buy a player, I never even considered HD-DVD.
