Hi, All

I have an unusual beast. It is a Sony RVP-6010Q, which is essentially a 1272Q CRT projector mounted in a rear projection cabinet with a 60" screen. It has liquid cooled lenses and a few other differences, but as far as I know it is basically a Sony 1272Q chassis.

The set is working great. If I watch a DVD on S-Video input, the image is perfect.

I just tried yesterday to set it up to project my computer using a simple VGA to RGBHV breakout cable. After setting up convergence, etc. I am able to get a decent image, except the left and right edges of the image are 'oscillating' slightlly (the image is stretching and shrinking horizontally). If I had to guess, I would say it is doing this 5 - 10 times per second.

I have tried different resolutions, different refresh rates, and even a different computer...nothing changes, although the shaking is worse at higher resolutions, and less at lower resolutions. If I shrink the entire image down substantially (to take up maybe half the screen) using the 'RGB size' controls, the shaking stops, but returns as soon as I go full screen again. Turning the projector off and on again makes no difference, nor does swtiching inputs and switching back.

Any ideas? My main questions is: do you think something needs repair, or is there an adjustment I might be able to make to stop this shaking? Confused

Thanks very much for any ideas or input...

Cheers,

Doug

Hi, Thanks for replying.

I have no idea how to capture this in pictures...the image is oscillating / shaking / moving...no still image could protray this.

It is 'shaking' back and forth (horizontally, not vertically, 'stretching' and shrinking') between full screen width and ~ 95% screen width.

I am happy to add some pictures if anyone has any ideas what to try to take a pic of, and how to do it...otherwise in this case I think the description is clearer than any pic could be.

The image quality in every other way is excellent. No issues with convergence, colour, focus, contrast, brightness, etc...all of which I could otherwise capture with a camera.

Your helpful suggestions are always welcome... Wink

Thanks,

Doug

Are you sure the cable is good?

Hi,

While it was running last night I tried unplugging one cable at a time from the RGBHV bundle. Each one made a predictable difference - ie unplugging H or V made the image scrambled / unviewable, while the other three plugs each killed one respective colour.

So at least each cable is sending a signal. Other than that, I have no way of testing the cable - I do not have another cable to swap out.

I also wondered if perhaps the RGBHV input card is faulty, but again I have no alternate to swap it for. What I might try is hooking up my Lumagen video processor to the RGBHV card with 5 RGBHV cables, and connecting my computer to the Lumagen with DVI...if it still does it, I know it's not the cable, it must be the projector or the input card.

While I was typing this I just realized I can try moving the card into the remaining empty slot - I will try that, but somehow I think it will not make a difference.

My best 'layman' guess is there is something with the automatic scanning feature not working properly (the specs state it will 'lock automatically to most computer frequencies').

I suppose it is possible something about this particular Dell laptop (and the IBM laptop I also tried) is not compatible, but I know I hooked up my previous Dell laptop to this machine (possibly with a different cable I used to have) with no issues.

I may try filming it, but I know that filming any video image produces flicker of its own anyhow, so I am not sure if that will work.

Thanks again for your suggestions,

Doug

I can't remember exactly what it is called on the Sony menu, but you can change sync options. Someone who is currently using a Sony 12XX may be able to chime in as to the menu page and title but it will have the below options listed:

Auto, H/P, and a couple of others.

I have seen problems like you describe when this is left in auto mode. H/P always seems to work best.

If this suggestion fixes it remember to save the new setting when done or it will come back.

That's a great suggestion, I will try it and let you know if it works.

Thanks so much!

Hi,

Last night I tried going in to the Sony menu settings using the 'page' key. There are four pages.

Only pages 1 through 3 have adjustments; page 4 is information only.

Page 3 has a setting called 'clamp setting' ...I think the options were 'Auto', 'stream', H/C, and one other one...in any case, I tried all of them and none made any difference to the 'oscillating' I am experiencing.

Page 4 shows all the sync settings, but offers no adjustment capability.

There were no other options on the pages that were adjustable that were relevant.

Next, I tried hooking up my laptop to my Lumagen video processor via DVI, then from the processor to the projector using individual RGBHV cables. The shaking remained, so this rules out the cable I was using before as a source of the problem.

I also noticed even when nothing was connected to the projector, if I switched to Input 'A' (RGBHV), that the message that appeared telling me there was 'no input' was also shaking...so clearly this problem is within the projector or input card...it is not external.

I shot a video of the screen, but my PC that has firewire input (so I can transfer the video from my camera) is packed away in boxes at present, so I can't post the video today. Perhaps tonight I will try to get it set up so I can do this.

Looking closely at the image again last night, I think I was exaggerating how much it is oscillating...it's fairly small, but definitely noticeable, especially with a static computer desktop image. I am not sure if will even be visible on the video or not. It is JUST enough to be unacceptable. It's probabaly going from 98% to 100% screen width and back, at a steady pace of around 5 to 10 times per second. The entire image is stretching and shrinking like a rubber band...it's not just lines flickering at the edge of the screen.

It stretches equally left to right, so the center of the image is unaffected, while the left and right edges show the most movement...just like a rubber band would do if you streched it back and forth evenly between your hands.

If I adjust the image size or position, while I am adjusting it it is totally smooth...then the oscillating returns a second or two after I stop makeing adjustments.

Any other suggesations are most welcome... Confused

Thanks,

Doug

Doug,

Try pulling and re-seating the CPU and convergence boards. Make sure the set has been powered down and unplugged for at least 10 minutes. Also, check the convergence D/A card for anything loose on it and re-seat if necessary.
