How do I distinguish between different generations of Sony VPH-12XX?
What changes was made to the models and how does this affect setup?

On the websites main page there is much info regarding the different projectors and difference's between them. Here is the link to the Sony 1200 series main page.

I apologize if I were not specific with my question.
I have found some conflicting infromation on the G2 adjustment on the VHP-1272. 1st generation PJ should be 4.0+/-0.2V but 2nd generation 1.5V. How do I tell wich generation of the VHP-1272 I own?

From what I remember, a black wire going to the power supply in the front, as well as HD-8 lenses tend to mean it is a 2nd gen.

I think only the 1272's withthe black ground wire from the power supply to the fan screw are the 1.5v models,

The serial number is a good place to start
For starters
1st generation the serial number is on a black sticker
2nd generation blue sticker
3rd generation is silver sticker
provided no one has changed the chassis or parts

The sticker color part isn't true of all models.. I have had a 2nd generation/black sticker, and I have a 3rd genereation with a black sticker here right now.
A 2nd generation machine will definitely have a groundwire going from a larger resistor on the PA board between the blue and green lenses to a screw on the fan next t the speaker. 3rd generation will have a "KC board next to the PA instead odfa "K". A 3rd gen. also has an extra connector on the "E" board in the center that the others do not.
Both 2nd and 2rd generation machines get the G2 set to 1.5v.

This is something I would expect.

Like I said "provided no one has changed the chassis or parts"
What is the serial number on your 3rd generation with the black sticker remeber this is only applicable to 1252 and 1272 with 07MSP tubes
This was a starting point only, you would never find the extra connector on the E board with out knowing where to look
If you have seen a 3rd generation you can not miss the differences however we are talking to some one who does not know the difference that is why they are asking
I have 1st generation units with the ground wire because it is very common for the power supply to be replaced in the 1252/1272 units

Of course what you say is true Halo
I usually say the groundwire because there is quite a bit of changing around to do to use a 2nd gen powersupply in a 1st gen. machine.. The HV block and a few other parts MUST go with it.
The 3rd generation machines have Serial Numbers starting with a 2. This was the first thing Wallace(Don) noticed with his 3, and is also true for my 3rd Gen 1252.

That does puzzle me as to why the "latest version" of a product has a lower serial number. A couple of months ago I called Sony in New Jersey and asked why. The guy didn't know and when I was asking for information about the 1272, he did not know much about crt projectors in general.
So, I did not take the conversation any further. But, I think I'll try again soon and maybe be able to talk to a different person that will hopefully be more knowledgable of crts.

My Sony VHP-1272QM has a 7-digit serial number beginning with a 5 on a blue sticker, Delta-HD-8M lenses and powersupply-fanscrew ground cable. That would make it a 2nd or 3rd generation machine with a G2 voltage of 1.5V.
Does anyone know the range of serialnumber of the different generations?

The service manual supplement says VPH-1272QM serial number 5,000,741 and later and VPH-1272Q Serial number 5,001,251 and later.
3rd Generation machines all have the serial number starting with a 2.
You have a 2nd generation 1272
