I was considering working on a motorized masking system for my basement Marquee setup, but I realized I would have to have it be automatic for any chance at getting the wife to use it. It will be a trivial matter to get the aspect ratio from my HTPC, but I won't be playing HD/BR discs there. What device could I use to determine the original aspect ratio of content on high-def DVDs?

How much are you willing to spend, I'm sure it can be done but the cost could be pretty incredible unless you find a way to DIY.

My best guess is you will need some sort of scaler processor that will allow your masking system to see what AR is being fed into the projector.

I've never seen a system like this so I'm not sure if one even exists, why don't you just set it up as a manual system with motor control and accept the fact that you will be the only person that knows how to use it, this would be cheaper than an automatic system and would make you look smarter than everyone else Wink

Yeah - I work with a lot of Extron equipment on my job, and they *may* have a scaler/processors that does this. I'll have to check to see what they have. I just didn't know if anyone here already did such a thing.

C'mon - I haven't been married long, but I have been married long enough to know that'd never make me look smarter than anyone in the house Very Happy

HMM!! How about a programmable remote. You'd have buttons for square (4:3), small rectangle (16:9), large rectangle (2.35:1). Start with the square. If the pic overlaps edges, push the small rectangle button. If the pic still overlaps the edges, push the large rectangle button. Or vice versa. Which might be the best approach. Start with the large rectangle and work your way down. It would be easier to see the pic NOT filling the screen than to see over spill / over scan. Especially if you use good masking material. I'd do the same process for the HTPC. That way things are consistent and work the same everytime. No matter the source. Else, you'll confuse the non-techies with detail "if it's HTPC, do it this way. If it's HD DVD/Blu Ray, do it this other way."

What AR is your screen and what will you be masking?

Most likely, a universal remote is going to be your best bet.

Why make it automatic? Maybe your wife does not care how the image are? Wink

Hi fuzzybee,

if you are looking for some ideas you can take a look here:

http://diy-community.de/showthread.php?t=24439&page=3

and here:

http://diy-community.de/showthread.php?t=23623&page=3

In the articles you can see (unfortunately you can't read if you can't read german) at least a couple of details showing my two HT installations with motorized masking. Both installations can mask 16:9, cinemascope (21:9) and 4:3. I have also constructed a IR receiver that can be controlled with every commercial available learning remote control. The remote should only be able to understand RC5 codes. All in all cheap and very reliable. If you wish I can post more information in this thread.
