SDI and HDMI are simply delivery methods. One isn't going to "look" better than the other.
SDI is limited to 480i or 480p (if I remember correctly). It's basically a way to get standard DVD content directly off a DVD player into a scaler or directly into your display. Again limited to 480 lines .
HDMI is a digital content delivery mechanism that can do both sound and picture up to very high resolutions.

I think HD-SDI will carry 720/1080/ etc, obviously you need the output hardware and an SDI input, did the Marquee have a SDI option? if so it might be worth checking into the upper limit of the input.

This was a hot topic in the Evil Twin forum. HD SDI modded BD and HD DVD players and a HD SDI input circuit with a RGBHV output. Does anyone remember Casper the unreliable ghost

Gino would be able to shed some light on this he's got HD-SDI feed Marquee's....basic SDI is really a brodcast transport, limited to SD resolution, however, your remove all DAC conversion and are reading straight off the mpeg chip....Gary Murell is the guy for modified DVD players....you could argue that SD SDI out of a DVD player feed directly into a SDI modded video scaler is the best DVD is going to look. I personally have a Panasonic RP-91 SDI modded DVD player into an iScan HD+ SDI chipped scaler...and it's pretty sweet.....
Having said that, HD anything looks better.
HD-SDI is where it's at......but it's expensive, hard to come by, and limited hardware, your money's better off spent elsewhere.

HD SDI and HDMI are both digital interfaces. Both effective interfaces as well, so it's hard to see what the benefit of HD SDI is. In the past, it seems the biggest argument for HD SDI over DVI and HDMI was no HDCP in the HD SDI signal. HDCP use to cause all kinds of handshake troubles, but that doesn't seem to be near the problem it use to be (I have 3 HDMI sources and they have no handshake problems). So today, I don't think there's any real world advantage to HD SDI. HD SDI proponents may argue that, but I'm with Kal. One isn't going to perform any better than the other.

Standard def SDI had the advantage of being digital, as opposed to a DVD player's stock analog outputs. In that application, SDI was a big plus. I think SDI's past reputation has somewhat carried over to the high def arena, but since HDMI is already digital, there's really nothing to be gained.

I agree with most of this, but I'll add just one thing. In theory, HD SDI may be able to be better because you would be getting the signal straight from the decoder which guarntees no source processing of the signal--something that cannot be guaranteed with HDMI. Many of the "use $1000 power cable" crowd thinks this is important. Lumagen has done tests and concluded that HD SDI had no advantage over HDMI with regard to signal quality, therefore will not support HD SDI.
