Tim, the Wilsonart DW screen was tested & approved in the AVS Screens forum. Most of the people there are digitoids. The DW screen works just fine for digitals, with some caveats.

If you get a light cannon, you may find you don't want the 1.24 gain of the DW. There's another Wilsonart color (Fashion Gray I think?) that's supposed to work well for a lower-gain screen, though the specularity isn't ideal.

You may also want to use the Fashion Gray if your new flashlight thinks "black" means "gray," as the lower-gain screen will darken the inappropriate gray areas. Of course if you were concerned about that, you should just stick with your CRT in the first place. Wink

There . . . I caved into peer pressure and changed the title of the the thread even. Very Happy

Thanks Gary, I was wondering about the light gain on the screen but I'm going to look for a CCHHEEAAAPPP projector and run it in economy mode so it won't be a very bright flashlight. The screen gain will probably help.

As soon as I get sick of the picture I'm going to look for a Marquee. I think I just bit off more than I could chew with the NEC and then got pissed off when it died. I should have stayed with my Barco 708. That almost set up itself.

So get any other Barco. The menus from 1990 to about 1999 are all about the same, regardless of model. LEss to learn that way.

Added are astig and focusing menus, but the basic geometry and convergence is unchanged from the 708. Why mess with perfection..Wink

Nah, you didn't make me feel bad. Sgt. Hartman can kiss my ass. Funny as hell though.

What I was sorry about is posting a digital question. I just thought of it as a screen-type question. I don't need to be posting a "This CRT sh*t is too hard" stuff on Curt's webpage. He has potential customers that come here. Truth is the 1272 and the D50 were pretty easy and the 708 was cake. You need more patience for the 9200 than I possess. Then, right after it lost its convergence, it died.

Thats where the "I'm done" came from. I'll buy another one someday. But I guaran-damn-tee you it will be a Barco or a Marquee. I'm a light-weight by choice. I'm sure that if you spent enough time on it you could make that NEC sing. I'm just to friggin lazy.

In the mean time, I will suffer the slings and arrows of being Judas. So long as I don't have to hang myself.

I can't imagine what you've been going through with that 9200. Shocked To be fair, I am an utter noob to CRT, but I consider my 708s to be fairly difficult to setup... Since I've seen what CRT has to offer, I can't go back to digital (especially on my budget), but MAN am I glad I didn't pick up a NEC when I first went shopping. Sounds like it takes some world-class patience and skill. I can tell I have a lot to learn!

Hi Cinenut. The 708s is a cool projector. It does 1080i really well. Its also one of the smallest and lightest. I put the color HD145s on mine and it got even better. I should have stayed with it but I got the "grass-is-alway-greener" bug and jumped one too many times. Have fun with it.

I'm still don't understand why you don't go back to a 708 or some other Barco. You're going to have spend some money on a digital to get one that will beat it.

Hey whats6x7 -- it's cool to talk to someone who actually owned this PJ! Smile I don't want to hijack your thread, but did you by chance check out my 708 post? I know you're probably fed up with CRT issues, but if you have any quick tips, I'd be super grateful. I'm lucky to have 2 sets of HD-145s along with a spare parts machine, so I'm dying to get back in business -- I'm just terribly inexperienced. Sad Thanks a ton in advance!

John, I didn't say you could kiss my ass. I said Sgt. Hartman can kiss my ass. I fully expected to get sh*t for bailing out . . .er . . .stepping away briefly.

Cinenut, I'm no Barco guru and I'm positive there are people here more knowledgeable than me. That said, I'll look at your other thread and throw in my 2 cents if there is any way I can help.

Phil, your right but I already ordered a cheap ass DLP (less than $400 new) and I moved the stand ithat the projector used to set on out of my office and replaced it with a big-ass recliner. The recliner has 2 100Watt bass shakers attached to the frame running on a 70 watt amp. The picture will look like sh*t but I'm hoping to off-set it with the sound.

I still have 6 100 Watt shakers and a 300 watt amp that my wife won't let me use on her new couches. Anybody need a tactile transducer or 2? How about 6 and an amp?

This is by no means a CRT vs DLP comparison. My CHEAP ($381 after rebates) Viewsonic fashlight came in yesterday and I thought I'd offer some opinions.

Specs: 1500 Lumens, 2000:1 contrast, 800x600 native, 4:3 native, VGA, sVideo, and composite inputs.

The contrast ratio says it has 2000 steps from lightest to darkest. Lightest to darkest in regular mode is light grey to blinding white. No sh*t, LIGHT grey. My office is painted for CRTs so I have a black front wall, black ceiling, and the the other walls are dark tan and dark burgundy. My office absorbs light. Because of that I can run this little guy in economy mode and turn the brightness down. Still not black, but not too bad.

I've lost a significant portion of my screen size. I had an 84"x48" 16x9 Wilsonart screen. This little guys has a longer throw and (like CRTs) no zoom. That means my biggest screen size on the wilsonart is 64x48 which drops my 16:9 down to 64x36. I can't back it up far enough to do 16x9 at 84x48. Bummer. I only sit 12' back so that's still pretty big.

Easy as hell to setup though. 10 minutes box to movie. I'm going to ceiling mount it (by myself . . . HAH! Take that!) later tomorrow.

If I hadn't seen a CRT before I'd be thrilled. It really isn't a bad picture. I remember thinking how remarkable a 480i DVD looked on my 1997 52" RCA Big screen TV. Its about in line with that picture.

I'm sure it has some RBE but I guess I'm one of those luck bastards that isn't sensitive to it. I only watch DVDs so the resolution is fine. Small amount of screen door if your close but disappears at 8' away. I'm going to set it up with AVIA in the next couple of days.

All in all, the Barco 708 is still me favorite so far. I'll play with this for a while but my next project will be a 708 ceiling mounted I think. Dollar for dollar you can't beat CRT for a high-end home theatre. This is just my office though so I think I can live with it for now.

I guess I'll have to keep my sig for a while.

Eh. I've mounted (and un-mounted) an XG, a Dwin, an 8500, and a G70. Only help I've had was occasional assistance from my 8- and 10-yr-olds. The 8500 and G70 I did without any help at all. The G70 went from floor to ceiling in 7 minutes, hooked into the mount in another 8 minutes.

*grunt* Strong like bool. Smart like one too.
