I'm getting ready to set up my NEC 9PG Xtra for the 1st time. This is my 1st PJ. Yes, I know NEC's are tough but I think I'm prepared.
I'll be mainly using it for movies (16:9 or 2.35:1) and HD (16:9). With the occasionally 4:3 content (old movie or even a Survivor special ).
I've got a 4:3 electric screen. Right now, it just hung from the ceiling. I'll be installing into the joist bay for a hidden installation later.
The PJ will be floor mounted for the moment. Later I will mount it on the ceiling.
My objective to play with this thing, get familiar with it and get the family excited.
OK! Enough background info. My questions are:
Should I do full setup, down to the last detail?
Pros
I get to learn more about the PJ
Better picture = more excited family. Maybe.
I've read you're 3rd set up is the best.
Cons
It will take quite some time to do this. Time that might be better spent doing the ceiling mounts of the screen and PJ.
How much of the set up or calibration will transfer from the floor mount to the ceiling mount?
The screen size will remain the same. Of course. So, the throw distance should be unchanged. I assume things like raster sizing, raster centering, image centering, astig, grey scale will not change. What would need to be redone/recalibrated?

Do the setup right while it is on the floor, this will help you learn how to set it up better and make it easier to setup when it is on the ceiling.

I agree, doing a full setup is best IMO. It's a lot easier to get familiar with it when you can easily see everything and will
help when access to internals becomes more difficult.

do your physical setup to screen-really thoroughly- then, if you set it up to the same distance you intend to permanently mount to you will be well into the ball park. I think I did 3 or 4 setups when I first set mine up on the ground, and all the practice was worth it...takes the intimidation factor down a notch or three!!

Well every setup is temporary, it just depends on how much you want to get into it 8)
I usually recommend that you set up the PJ on a table or something you can move around. After that you set up a all white image on the green, go as big as you can go and in the center, of course. Position the PJ so it fills the screen. You also have to remember with different signals the image size will change, even some DVD's will not have the same image width, so you need a little fudge factor built in.
When you do mount it in the ceiling you need to build your mount so you have adjustment for tilt, left right, and fore and aft. Leave plenty of room to move the PJ back and forth towards the screen, if anything will change it will be the throw distance.
I would plan on a 16X9 screen too, as that is what everything is going to be.

wow Aubrey, is it really true I can't believe it.
like everyone else said, you should learn as much as possible before doing it all overhead. I have finally gottne to the point where floor or ceiling makes no difference to me on the Marquee's but floor is a much easier place to learn. Let me know if you need a hand, gald to help out with the ceiling mount. Also, Gary Fritz knows the NEC's pretty well so he might be able to lend a hand as well.

You BRUTE!! You take that back or I'll give you such a SMACK!! Humph. (flounces into the next room)
I'd say "set it up completely." With the assumption that your first attempt at "complete" won't be all that complete. Expect that you're going to do stuff wrong, and you'll do it better the next time. Or 4 times.

Hey Aubrey looks like they still have Moome HDMI cards for the NEC's. I would suggest that this a must for any modern CRT set-up. I also have a pair of the mounting ears for ceiling bracket in case you decide (realize that using uni-strut by itself really sucks.

Thanks guys! Looks like the temporary floor mount will be a little longer time period. I was thinking that learning the PJ on the floor would be the easiest method. I plan on putting the PJ on a piece of plywood on the carpet. Hopefully that's shovable but not too easily moved. I wouldn't be to happy if the wife whacked it with the vacuum and knocked it out of alignment. I'll put a coffee table over it. Just in case.
For the ceiling mount, by thoughts are unistrut with the factory mount attached to it. That will give me fore and aft plus tilt. With just a little yaw but no side to side. Measure twice, thrice or more before drilling.
Dragan
PG's can't take cards but I've got a Moome EXT-HD order in the 2nd batch. I'm kind of glad I missed the 1st batch cut off. I don't need the ears but I do need a spacer and some bolts. I'll give you a call about the spacer and summer camping.

Yep! Just move the puppy back and forth to get the correct throw distance. NEC's manuals are known to be wrong. Thanks for the tip on various DVDs. I didn't realize that.
Guys
Any comments on how much of the calibration will transfer from the floor to the ceiling mounting?
