I have had this NEC XG1351 for 5 years and have never been happy with 72Hz (71.928) refresh. I always had a really bad “beating” or flicker in the picture at 72, when running 60Hz or 96Hz no flicker but needless to say it was very soft running 1080p@96Hz. I prefer using 72 because I feel I get much smoother motion then 60Hz on film based transfers, I get decent sharpness @1080p72 not fully resolved but a very nice picture but the “beading” was unbearable. I have tried everything to get rid of it with no luck different cables, power conditioners, removed the ground off the projector because I thought it might be a ground loop problem nothing worked. Sometimes it was so bad it would show up as a hum bar but as I said earlier only when running 72Hz.
Today I was up in the ceiling cleaning out come cobwebs noticed the ceiling fan I installed when I built the theater to help ventilate the soffit the projected is mounted in, the fan is a good foot above the projector and was installed even when I was running my old Barco Graphics 800. But then I wondered if it could be EMI (Electromagnetic interference) causing my problem. I setup a custom timing in Powerstrip @ 71.928 Hz, but note I did not disconnect power to the fan yet, put on a test pattern got my good ole flicker problem I then cut the power going to the fan and BANG no flicker. I spent the next 1-1/2 tweaking in the new input. Then watched a Blu-ray and HD-DVD & I must say this is the best the project has ever looked.
I’m not sure what the moral of the story is, but it is something everyone should consider when building a hush box for their projector and do not overlook something that should have been so obvious.

Huh. Ain't that a kicker. Who woulda thunk. Is the fan remote controlled? I have a fan in my living room that's controlled by a wall switch, and the wife wanted one of those decorative rings around it. So I buy a one piece one, (little did I know they can be had in two parts so you don't have to take the fan down,) I take the bottom cover off the thing where the electrical connections are, I untwist the black, the white, the ground, and then i get to this orange one. I unscrewed the wire nut and touched the wire (hey...the switch was off on the wall. Shouldn't be power right???) and damn near got knocked off the ladder. That's when I learned there's always somethin going on up in there regardless of on/off. It almost let out MY magic smoke.

Don't want to let the smoke out
The fan is actually a very high quality bathroom exhaust fan that runs 24/7 and is almost totally silent. I will probably just remove it. As it happens the area above the projector has a return air duct nearby so I can use the HVAC in the house to pull air out of the soffit/hush box area. I run my HVAC blower 24/7 also so it should do the job fine but for the time being I will monitor the temps in the space just to be safe. I will probably save a few pennies on my electric bill not running that fan all the time as an addition plus.
