If your name is not here. I did not get your box yet.
I received the parts I need to get repairs done.

http://www.canadapost.ca/segment-e.asp to look up tracking numbers.
Note: Canada Post tracking numbers are notoriously useless for en-route packages. They do not update progress.

In case you need to know for planning purposes, I'll be shipping mine tomorrow or Saturday (I first need to dig out my Key Digital component -> RGB transcoder to hook my Comcast DVR, Tosh A3, and Wii boxes back up ... it's going to be a little bit inconvenient switching cables between the three sources, or maybe I'll buy a cheap or used component switcher for the repair period).

I'll be sure to include my name, address, and e-mail inside the box. Smile

Cliff, in Seattle

I recently wrote to Moome requesting the he send the repair parts to Barry so he could fix these boxes. His response was, and I quote, " What Parts"! What is going on here? Like Nate I am glad to see that Barry received my EXT-HD since it took 2 weeks to get to him from Reno.

Barry, please let us know what is going on with the parts situation.

I emailed and got the address of where to send it (although I am a little confused on the customs form - I suppose that is filled out at US Post Office?)

But I wasn't planning on sending it in until I heard in the forum or from Joust that the parts were in. I am using the box right now and don't see why it should sit in Canada awaiting parts from Taiwan?

Fill out the customs form at the Post Office. There's a small and a large form - ask which one to use. Be certain that you say that it is being returned for repair! You can go with cheap shipping or you can go expensive. If you want insurance you must go expensive and use the larger form.

Please include the RMA # and line of text you were give.

Defective electronic switch back for repair. RMA #14xx
Value = $ 0

On and one more request. for your own good.
please do not use peanuts when shipping. they do not provide adequate protection. Bubble wrap is best.
Take out the toslink blank plug. I've had one that had that plug pushed in the box and it sheared off the toslink transceiver.

Lets see... Time to figure out what's wrong with the boxes? Weeks! Time to get the parts to repair the boxes after figuring out what's wrong? Weeks! Time to fix and ship the boxes after finally getting the parts? A day!

Barry, you're too good to be true! Thanks!

Hey, cummon. don't be so hard on Moome. this is a complex little bit of engineering.
I can see how this problem could get through verification testing and he is being pretty damn good about fixing them. the problem is exacerbated by distance and language barriers. Ultimately it was a single part substitution at fault. Those can be very hard to track down.

True, but had the boxes been tested thoroughly they would never have been shipped in the first place. The EE problem was afterall a common and obvious problem with all the 1st gen units. I'm happy with the outcome though. Well done everyone!

Moome does functional testing of all boxes before he ships them to customers. He does not do 'performance testing' however as that should not change since he really has to assume that the parts he asked for were used in building the boxes.

That was the problem. Moome did all of the performance testing when designing the circuitry, had some prototypes build and performance tested those and found that they looked great.

Then the manufacturer used some incorrect parts on the actual batch that were not what Moome specified.

Before sending the boxes or cards out to customers he doesn't go through and re-test them from the ground up as is it was a brand new design. That would take days per box. No manufacturer does this. You do functional spot checks to make sure the basic functionality works as designed.

(whups, Kal beat me to it, ohwell... Smile)

Ideally he would have caught it in testing before they shipped. But I suspect he just checked that they worked, not that 1080p images displayed without EE. (In fact he apparently *couldn't* test that for some reason, why was why he had to send test parts to Barry instead of doing the fix and testing it himself.) I'm sure he (very reasonably) expected the boxes to be manufactured to his specs. They weren't, and I'm not surprised that caught him flat-footed.

Given that, and the difficulties of him testing it and timezones and all, I don't think the time to isolate the fix was all that unreasonable. And Barry's right, comparing the "WTF went wrong" diagnosis process to the "replace a couple of diodes" fix process is comparing apples and wombats.

I don't think that's true. No reason to thoroughly test each box, but I think ALL manufacturers randomly check product thoroughly, regardless if it's 1st, 2nd or 3rd run, to be sure there are no problems. All moome needed to do in this case is thoroughly test *ONE* and this problem could have been avoided.

I can see where Moome could assume from past testing that everything was ok, but that was no if-ands-or-buts ill advised. He shouldn't have done that. That's an assumption that should not have been made.

You've obviously never worked in manufacturering Phil! Wink
