This will simplify what processors do.

Interesting read, doesn't really speak about other features of video processors though. Also has nice quick overview of CRT

It is real good for someone that knows nothing about them. And do not really understand about interlaced verses progressive.

This is one of the best references for de-interlacing and video processing:

Secrets of home Theater and HiFi are very good as well.

Hi -

I am learning...now that I am figuring out my 7"ESF and will see what it can do, I am learning more about how to feed it! While the PDF above helps, but does anyone know of any other overviews like this that include reference to more modern equipment (circa 2002-present) and maybe even HTPC use? The Video Processors part of the CRT Primer/FAQ is a great collection of manuals, but has no intro for novices like me.

The scalars vs. video processor vs. PC thread on this forum in 2008 (link below) illustrated the complexity and personal nature of such decisions. For me, I am especially curious about Aspect Ratio management. For example, do I save source settings in the ECP, do I get a VP that can do this for me/ease doing so, etc...? While the "Example Setups" part of the "CRT Primer" is fantastic in seeing how everything might go together, it does not help one evaluate or make decisions regarding the relevant scalar, video processing technology, or HTPC route to adopt. That is, I didn't find a one-stop-shop document to help CRT users take the following into account:

1) Your CRT PJ's capabilities (scan rates and bandwidth)
2) Your image sources (sources their use frequencies, aspect ratios, etc)
3) The relevant and available technology (line doublers, scalars, video processors <color, gamma, etc>)
4) Your budget, viewing prefs, time available for setup, etc.

I'm thinking a CRT-specific intro document for the Video Processors FAQ page (this under CRT Primer/FAQ and right now is a collection of manuals] might be merited. Or maybe a sticky Newbie-read-this-first thread. While I've found a few FAQs elsewhere (like: http://www.yubyub.net/scalerfaq/faqanswers.htm#Q2), I think a CRT specific FAQ that shows evolution of how all the capabilities have grown could be very helpful.

1) line doublers (early signals, sd tv, LD, VHS. intro to composite and s-video and rgbhv)
2) scalars (same, but more detail, bridge into component source. film vs video modes, etc)
3) video processors (color, gamma, etc; word on integrated switching, intro to dvi, hdmi)
4) HTPC role/abilities/trade-offs

Matt

Are Scalars now obsolete" thread...
