I hope someone can help. I have the chance to purchase a HDIH-2000 crt projector (sony) but can find very little about it. Does anyone know if it is any good? I am looking to step up from a barco 801s.

Welcome to the Forum,

I think it is a 9" LC projector based on the 12xx chassis. I think it also has some special motorized nikon lenses.

I wouldn't pay much for one due to rarity, but it should be an upgrade from a Barco 801s

It would be kind of cool to have a projector that rare, but I'd also be a little concerned about parts if you had a failure. Not an issue I guess if the price were right. It should be a heck of a decent 1080i machine.

It's not worth more than maybe 500 Euros IF it is in perfect working condition.

It pre-dates the 1292 (released in 1989). So it is 19 years old.

In stock form it does max 1080i60 (max scanrate of 35 kHz, max Bandwidth of 30 MHz). Spatztech from Germany had a modified set that scanned to something like 90 kHz though, but that was maybe a one of a kind deal.

I don't think the bandwidth limitation is really a big deal to make it a nice 1080i machine. In fact, that machine was designed specifically FOR 1080i. Actually, it wasn't 1080i back then - it was called 1125-line HDTV back then, which was essentially the analog predecessor to the 1080i we use today.

1080i really only needs about 35mhz of bandwidth in the display, and 30 isn't far off. There'd be a little high-frequency roll-off - which is probably where the 1000 TV lines spec comes from. But, my 1271 and 1272 are rated 75 and 85 mhz respectively, and they don't even come close to fully resolving 1920 or 1080i. The additional bandwidth in the 1271 and 1272 was so it could half-acceptably display 1600x1200@60hz, which requires about 2.5x the bandwidth as 1080i!!!

Also, I know the lenses are definitely a shortcoming in both of my machines. I bet with those Nikon lenses, it would be every bit as nice looking as any other 12xx - if not better.

Thanks for the replies. It costs about 200 pounds (UK) but I have not checked the condition of the tubes. I am little worried it is so rare though. Should I go for it then if the tubes are good?

That's about $400 US or $270 euros, which seems about right, I suppose - given what it is and assuming the tubes are in nice shape. Just for reference, 1271/1272 machines in nice shape here in the US go for around $200-400 - not sure what those machines sell for in the UK.

OK, I forgot you were looking for an upgrade from an 801, though. I don't know that it's going to be much of an upgrade, since the 801s is pretty much in the same class as a Sony 12xx. Same tubes and lenses, in fact. The rare Sony would have EM focus and liquid coupling, but then the 801s is probably a 4-year newer projector.

How does your 801s look with HD material at 1080i, and what kind of shape are the tubes in?

HD 1080i looks okay on the barco, tubes about 6000 hours. I wondered if the EM tubes would mean an improvement in sharpness. If the differences are marginal i think I will give this a miss.

It certainly could be a little sharper, but who knows? The rarity of the machine would bother me if it were my primary projector. Who knows what tubes are even in the machine? I'd probably pass, too if you can't look at, play with it, maybe see it setup with a source, etc.

This machine is supposed to be a razorsharp 1080i machine. Just take a look at it and see if you like the image.

Damn! I wish they still produced that rigid torus screen. If you do a search on the A-site, I think there were a couple of reviews talking about the PQ.

I know - I was thinking the same thing. It looks like a really sweet screen. Did you see the size of that thing? 112.5" x 66.75" - about 9 1/2 x 5 1/2 FEET! That's bigger than my WilsonArt screen - which seems HUGE to transport. Can you imagine shipping that thing!!?!?!

These things seem REALLY rare... I wonder how many of them Sony ever made.

If the tubes are good, I think it'd be worth picking up one of these bad boys - if for no other reason just to take a bunch of pics and play with it for some time, and for the bragging rights. Looks like a really interesting piece of CRT projector history to me.

just saw the machine briefly and didn`t look at the tubefaces, pj is supposedly from 1992.
