Yeah I'm sure building a 2x4 or aluminum sq tube frame would help things stay straight. The piece I had was hung from the wall in 2 places with no frame and after a while you could see the ends start to warp/curl length wise.

Because we're so close to the rockies and on the east side it does get very dry here, so one would think that warping wouldn't be a problem but it was. Hell, all the trim in my house(which I just built) is 5/8" mdf and I can already see it warping and or shrinking in spots.

What kind of material is base of the wilsonart board, is it MDF?
Laminate is compressed paper and resin with a plastic coating on top. It's not MDF.

Damnit Walter!!!

I just went into my bathroom and took a dump. The toilet I sat on was made out of porcelin!

You had me thinking that I was "blowing mud" on a piece of MDF!!!

Get your stories straight!!! Not everything is made of MDF and warps!

Smile Smile Smile

Just kidding. I've got some 3/4 out in the garage that has warped as well.

One thing i would like to know is:

Is the wilsonart transparent to any degree? Does it need to be blackpainted on the back before glued to mdf??

I mean does the material it's glued to show through?

And how is the surface? smooth like a professional screen like studiotek 130?

It's totally opaque.

It's smooth like a countertop. Smile

Yeah, DEFINITELY opaque. Thickness is around 1.22mm and it's made of a plastic composition, so you can see why it doesn't transmit any light.

Compared to most pro screens, though (like Stewart) - I wouldn't really characterize it as that 'smooth' or as that 'matte'. It's got kind of a 'pebble' or textured finish to it. WilsonArt calls the finish "60 - Matte", and they have several finishes that are much smoother all the way up to a mirror-style polished gloss.

Here's how WilsonArt describes it:
Quote:
#60 Matte
Textured finish with a moderate reflective quality. Recommended for horizontal and vertical
application. Glossometer reading: MD and CD 10 ± 2.

If you want, I can try to snap a macro shot with a Post-It note or something for reference so you can get a sense of what the surface looks like in person.

How about a scan? Here's 3 samples of Wilsonart on the left and a regular sheet of white paper on the right{HP Bright White Ink Jet paper, 24lb(90g/M2) 108+ brightness}

No, that's probably the cheap scanner causing that. The area right next to the Wilsonart is shadowed. That makes it look like it has texture. It's hard to get the texture to scan just right. The paper is smooth and the Wilsonart has a fine bumpey texture.

They are lying if they say Wilsonart doesn't make it. They may not carry it and have no interest in importing it, but Wilsonart makes it.

I have a Stewart Ultramatte 150 (gain of 1.5) for sale. A move to a smaller home makes the sale necessary. This is a wall mounted Electroscreen with a line voltage switch. The screen dimensions are: 50" x 80" (104" diagonal) Top masking 4" - Bottom masking 2" - side masking 3.5" Housing length 104" housing color black. Batten width 98" color black.

I bought this screen new in 2001. It is in great condition. If shipping is required, I have the original box.

Price: $2200.00 plus shipping.

Can you get any material larger than 5x8 like MDF? Wilsonart is good if you don't want to paint, but it might be easier to paint a screen in your case.

i remember researching some of hurley's screen material when i built my first torus. is that what you are using the 1.5 for? i got some samples, but they would have been tossed during the move.

if you're not using it in a torus, what type of frame are you useing? diy?

Don't forget about the Hurley screens. Mine is a 1.5 gain and I can't find anything wrong with it including the price for it, and they will custom size it for what you need at no extra charge.
