I know that ethylene glycol mixed with glycerine is what is used for crt colant.
Has anyone tried Propylene Glycol?? it is safe and nontoxic to animals That is what i am worried about as i do have a dog and if the projector develops a leak i do not want to have the dog get sick.
the refractive index is 1.431 ethylene glycol has a refractive index of 1.435.
would that make a big difference?
it is also way les corrosive than ethylene glycol. no more fungus in lenses????
Just curious
Thanks John

I was thinking that besides the fact that it is non toxic it is also less corosive it could possiably stop the lens fungus problem??? I have the proper stuff but was curious if anyone has tried it. as it seems I could get a gallon of Propylene Glycol for about $10.00 usd plus shipping.

Fungus is NOT caused by glycol. Clarity is #1

The "Fungus" is actually tiny bits of corroded material from the tube housings, caused BY the glycol's corrosiveness.

thank you sonynut do you think this will help going with Propylene Glycol? I know that the housings are hard anodised to prevent corosion. but it does happen still..

The guys here will recommend the proper glycol. It has to be of a very good quality to prevent optic distortion. Not just any glycol will do. There does not seem to be a huge difference in the reflective index, no. BUT why take chances. You could also try a search for "glycol" in this forum. There have been a few threads lately with links to glycol suppliers.
I understand the concern, but if the projector is properly maintained, and you check the condition of the sealant before refilling, the projector will probably be dead before the glycol leaks out.

I have at the moment no idea why propylene glycol not is used, because propylene glycol has similar properties as ethylene glycol (MEG) and already years is the industrial norm to replace ethylene glycol by propylene glycol were is possible.
The properties from a HD8B lens are based on a liquid coolant nD from 1.42 and from a HD10E on nD 1.443 by 65 degree Celsius.
some properties http://www.dow.com/ethyleneglycol/about/properties.htm (TEG have here also an E number E1520)
Or it must be squirm which by ethyleneglycol already starts by a 20% glycerol mix, thats why you cannot get closer to the nD from the front plate (nd 1,537) to reduce the fresnell reflection to a absolute minimum
