Guys,
I'm too excited about my good fortune not to share with my CRT buds.
Last spring, I bid on what seemed to be a basket-case G70. This thing had a list of errors as long as your arm. I threw in a low-ball "for parts" price bid not expecting to win... but, I did. By the time it was shipped, I had about $750 in it, including a giant custom road case (still need to figure what to do with THAT thing), remote, and power cord. I took delivery of it while I was right in the middle of building my theater. The basement was a filthy mess from the HT construction, so I just checked it out in the garage and put it back in the case. The tubes were PERFECT. The inside of the machine hardly had any dust on it.
Well, fast forward... The projector sat in the road case in my garage until yesterday.
Since Friday, it's been cold enough here to freeze the balls off a brass monkey (-3 to -5 deg F). I was a little concerned about the projector sitting out there, so I had a buddy come over and help me load it into the basement. I l let it sit and warm up with a fan and a dehumidifier on it overnight. I have other stuff I could be doing, but curiosity got the best of me. I went down and tore it apart, pulled all the cards, re-seated, checked all connectors, checked HV connectors, and did a general once-over. Wow, this machine is clean. There isn't even any dust on the neck card fans. It's super clean inside. Not "been cleaned up clean", but "never been dirty" clean. Sweet.
OK, here goes nothin'! Plugged in the mains, turned on the main power switch... hold breath and hit the power. We've got fans, there's the HV crackle, there go the tubes firing up. I kept waiting for it to shut down, but so far so good. Turned off the warm-up screen and cranked the contrast down. Went and looked up the service menu combo, and plugged it in. The anticipation is KILLING me. Punch up the menu, scroll down to hours... 148! A hundred and frickin' 48. Holy SHEEP sh*t. SCORE!
Wow, I'm excited. My buddy's coming over tomorrow morning to help me set it up on a test stand in the HT for a few weeks and make sure it's good to go. If all is well, I'll hang it up!
Thanks to Curt for giving me a little guidance and some confidence. I didn't do anything differently than I would have without his guidance, but it still helped knowing he had my back. Of course, had it not fired up, I would have been bowing before him for help. Thanks to Curt and everybody here for sharing all the great info over the years, without which I probably never even would have ever had the confidence to even bid on the machine.
Later,
SC

That's awesome.
I bought a toasted G70 and then put new tubes in it. Nearly 2 years and about 2000 hours later it looks as good as day one (to the best that I can remember.)
If my hush box wasn't hard to take down I would pull the lenses and check the tubes because peering with the flashlight they look minty still.

Yeah,
I would love the road case too. But,.. it's not like I'm ever going to be moving the pj so ... not sure why I would want it apart from that it's something related to the pj.

Holy schikeys! So... there wasn't anything wrong with it at all? That's awesome good luck. 150 chassis hours on a G70... that's a beautiful thing. Enjoy it!

How in the heck did you let that thing in in the garage for almost a year?
I might not have put it into a messy HT. but shoot.. I couldn't have just let it sit..
LOL.. what is the heat gun for?

congratulations, looks like endless patience finally pays off. Now you have a reference projector to go in that nice new theatre you just finished.

Awesome deal. To put your find into perspective, I bought my first G70 in 2001 from a local a/v company for $3500.00. 144 hours on it. I sold it to Korea for $6500, and had I had 10 more in that shape, they would have sold within a week for $6500.
Oh, those were the days! THat still doesn't take away from your awesome find!

Outstanding! Merry Late Christmas for you.
Now, you'll need to post some pic of your "newly upgraded" ht. And, screen shots.

Wow! That looks almost brand new. BTW, you're going to love LC & EM. Do you have Graham's setup DVD? It's a huge help early on in the setup process. You suck, but from what you've shown us of your new HT room, you deserve it bigtime! Enjoy!

Thanks, guys. Yeah, I kinda feel like I do deserve it, actually. I've been waiting for the right machine for years - missed a few, passed over many more, but just kept waiting and watching.
As for leaving it in the garage all that time, I just assumed it was pretty F-ed up and never made time (or space) for what I thought was going to be a big project (so many other things to do). Here was the error list:
| Quote: | 26--A lens is removed.
33--Abnormal high voltage.
34--Abnormal load on a LOT of the PA board.
40--There is abnormality in the CRTs.
|
I knew Curt would probably be able to help me get it going - maybe by swapping a few boards with me - and I'd be set. But, I imagined the worst - that the set had been dropped or something and had more than one thing wrong with it. I never in my wildest dreams imagined I'd be able to re-seat boards and connectors and have a perfectly working set. No way. If I weren't so excited about the outcome, I'd be pissed at myself for not getting on it sooner.
So, looking at the error list, they can all come back to the PA board, I think. Interestingly, it's obvious somebody has been in there - the PA board cover screws were the only screws on the set that weren't pristine - they're kind of dicked up actually. Some monkey obviously went to town on those cover screws. So, I don't know if that board wasn't seated in the bus connectors or what... if somebody was trying to fix it - or if they're what screwed it up. Nothing looked loose when I opened it up. The machine came from an AV rental house in NJ an hour or so from NYC, so it's certainly possible it could have been handled roughly in the road case. Who knows?
I don't care - I have a kick-ass new projector!

Oh, yeah - I do have Graham's DVD. Just got it last week, in fact. It should help immensely with Scheimpflug, since I've only done that a couple of times on some 909's and a couple Christie 9500's - but that was like 8 years ago - and I was just watching and helping, not doing it myself.
I had to drive up north with the wife and kids to have dinner with friends yesterday evening, and I was thinking about 'my little upgrade' about half the time.
One issue I need to work out is buying or building a new mount plate for the G70 to interface with my custom mount in the ceiling. Anybody got a factor mounting plate for the G70 they want to part with?

SC | Do you know if the G70 uses the same as the G90 factory mounting plate?

Glad to hear you have Graham's disc. Very important to center the correction values (esp zone piont conv) @ 128 and set the yokes so they will require minimum digatal correction. That, optical focus and sheimpflug are the only setup things that need to be done outside the remote. (Other than physical placement of the unit.)
