As far as I knew it wasn't until after WWI that the United States decided not to get involved in world affairs, and until Pearl Harbour the US never even joined into WWII. If you really want to understand world history and what really happened during these wars, you should stop learning about them by watching American Movies, they always play you guys out to be the saving heros in every battle that has ever been fought, but can you really name me one war that the Americans have actually one, that wasn't fought on your home soil? Even us little Canadians beat you up, and burnt your White House. Just read the fine print and you will see that the Canadians, and Brits, are the ones with the heart, courage and guts, not just the Americans. It isn't always about how many tanks and boats you have, it is about the spirt and will of the infantry that gets the job done, and that is where the Canadians, and British troops win every time. Guess who's troops are stationed in the most dangerous part of Afganastan...I'll give you a hint, not the US!
What America has is Manufacturing Power, that is what won the North the Civil War, that is what helped the allies beat Germany, that is what intimated the USSR, and speaking of Germany, there the ones that beet Japan for you, with all there scientists that the US smuggled out of Germany, there the ones that developed the atom bomb.
But you are right, we the rest of the world does need to bow down to the almighty US, the savoirs of the "FREE" world....

And before us it was the Brits.
Before them the church.
Before that the Romans.
Ah the old America is the demon, I agree we should perhaps try and spend less time involved in other countries affairs, but last time we as a country buried our heads in the sand it resulted in two world wars, one of which my Father fought in.
Europe has an older richer history than the US, as does the rest of the world, but lets face the fact that after the end of WWII it was the US that rebuilt europe, stood up against the soviets for a former enemy "Germany" and helped the Brits through lend lease and eventually american lives in its defense. Name another country that has done that.
Dont forget the number of selfless american boys buried in Europe defending those countries rights to exist. Europe and the rest of the world owe the US nothing but a little respect.
That being said, the US is not perfect, and never will be, but it is the reason most of the world today is free. |

If you think that going from $1.00 a gallon gas to $3 a gallon gas has no affect on individual finances you are sadly mistaken.

Oh I think it has an effect... But the guy you are talking about has a frign iphone with a absurd monthly bill, just bought the new shiny plamsa TV with his Chase card (God that commercial pisses me off) Then he has to get the cable/Satelitte to pump into the TV..
Wait.. Did I just come up with the extra money for fuel without giving up any necessities?
Remember gas didn't jump from 1.00 to 3.00 overnight... And folks have been bitching that it was going to cross the 3.00 dollar mark for what. .. The last three to four years... Come on... Spare me already...
Not to mention that all of this didn't stop them from buying there favorite movie title, whose price jumped from closer to 15 bucks to upwards of 20. That is assuming he didn't spring 30 bucks for the Blue ray...And I'll bectha you would find all that stuff in better than 90% of the foreclosures that are coming to the market.. ( It is about damn time good deals on homes came around )
I say enough with the whining and carrying on... It seems folks want the economy to tank... The power of auto suggestion works both ways...
Whether you think that you can, or that you can't, you are usually right.

Actually Fireanimal it is you that needs to study your history,
America was involved in WWII way before Pearl Harbor.
We had a lend-lease agreement with GB before we were officially in the war. We also had several ships sunk by the Germans before we ever formally declared war on them.
It was Americas reluctance to get involved in foreign affairs that kept us out of the war until the US was directly attacked.
After that is was up to the US to gear up thier manufacturing to provide the rest of the world enough weapons to fight the Germans and the Japanese.
Americans are typically hesitant to get involved in world affairs, it is out leaders that get us into trouble.
I could frankly give a sh*t about what other countries think about the US. I dont expect anyone to bow down to the US, but lets face it, no-one else is running to aid foreign countries when they get into trouble. The US has the highest per capita giving than any other country in this world.
I wish our country would stop aiding dictators and countries that slam us, sit back protect the oil and tell the rest of the world to go to hell, kick out the UN and tell them to solve thier own problems.
Your right it would be a better place if the US pulled out of the world community. Let the dust fly and the chips land where they may, then we can get criticized for not acting

So guys after looking at that list, gasoline going up is a good thing! The higher the price, the less people will drive, therefore less people will get turned into hamburger or die.
If you thing about it, the other leading causes should go down too, as more people would get more exercise getting from here to there.
If you look for it, there is usually a good side and a bad side to things, our society dwells on the bad side. Me, I went out and got a cool electric assist bike (Pedelec).

Really? You got one too?
My ebike is the coolest thing I've ever owned. 3500k in 6 months. I don't need my car anymore. I ride to work everyday, I take the kids shopping, to the park, or to the library with the trailer. Only use the car when I really have to, and I could count on one hand the number of times we've needed two cars since I got it.
I've completely lost my (fledgling) beer gut, my sixpack is back...well, not like I'm 18 again, but I'm as fit as I was then - and this bike has a 500w motor, I cruise at 40km/h.
We've changed the way we live, not completely, but quite a lot - we grow our own veges, have chooks, and use way less energy than we used to (~22kWh down to ~13kWh per day). And well, never been happier.
I like fixing CRT's, and playing with PC's, but "stuff" doesn't make you happy. Growing things and raising kids does, not possessions. (Well, baiting Conservative Americans is kinda fun too, but ultimately pointless. (Baiting Conservative RELIGIOUS Americans is even funner, but even more pointless.)
So yes, there is an upside.
And I assumed you were talking about "external" causes of death. Not "internal" like heart attack and strokes. Drowning would be higher here and gun related deaths lower.
Terrorism is not on the list. So why is it the foreign policy cover story of the decade? LOL.

I have no problems with the US, and there envolvement in the world, but it just a lot of Americans think that they are the only Country that can and is doing it, so I may have over reacted. I have a lot of friends in the US, and do a lot of business there as well. The Canadians are an excellent Ally with the US, and have been with you guys in every major Battle over the last 100 years, but when we get zero credit in the US news, media, and movies. It is the fault of the US propaganda machine, that we never get mentioned, and it is always your soldiers that have one the battle.

Damn Mark... Somehow when the kids get a little older I'll bet the trailer will be out.. But I just ride my regualar old bike to the store all the time. My 7 year old also rides the 5 mile trip quite often. We knock it out in just under an hour each way. It is a lot of fun.

So really besides the fact that we don't like each other i would think we are cut from more of the same cloth than either of us would ever admit. LMAO
And we would never admit it because you go and say things like this...

Terrorism is not on the list. So why is it the foreign policy cover story of the decade? LOL. |
After some joker wrote the Mien Kmapf in 1925.. It became the "Phony War"... Then by 1945 FIFTY SIX MILLION people were dead. Have you read "the knights under the prophets banner" yet? Oh thats right.. This is just some plot GWB dreamed up with Cheney.. I forgot...
Really how big of a problem could AQ setting up a Caliphate in Baghdad be anyway?

HEHE... now that is funny You can't try and play the U.S. off as weak and then admit the power of the "propaganda Machine" It is not Ordinance and man power, nor technology that EVER wins wars. Hearts and minds do...
If you want mentioned. Do it yourself... Really you can't blame us for that can you?
(But if you still want to compare Foot Soldier to Foot Soldier or Marine to Marine, I think the ROK guys are probably the toughest on the planet. I have have met quite a few British Royal Marines that I sure wouldn't intentionally get tangled up with. But as a whole... NOBODY can top the operational speed, tempo, and pure "warrior culture" of the USMC.)
