I'm thinking about doing the spacer mod on my 1251(+20 barkenstein) after reading:

This mod advices to use 3/4 inch length springs, but what's the thread size?
An online source for the springs would be ideal or Curt selling it as a kit

I actually used nuts instead of springs. If I remember correctly, they were 10mm. I tried springs, but like using nuts better. With nuts, I could take the front cover off and the tubes wouldn't move much. If you just rely on the springs, they have a greater possibility of moving and you have to redo your setup if you take the front cover off.
I used a little larger springs because they were stronger. Don't remember the size though. You do have some play with the size. The springs just have to be able to press against the tube and the chassis, and provide enough support to press back against the tube and nut you put on the front. Just make sure the springs compress enough to get to the area you need.

I just did this mod a couple months ago. I'll find the specs on the springs in a minute, the nuts are M5 x.8 thread size and they are an 8mm (5/16) hex size. I was actually thinking about buying this stuff in bulk and selling it as a kit. I got the grommets from a friend but I'll find some new ones.
This is the hardware that I bought from McMaster-Carr online. Go to http://www.mcmaster.com/ and search part numbers 90576A114 for the locknuts (so they don't move from vibration)
9657K152 for the springs (that are the right tension)
9307K35 for the grommets (for the inner pivot)
I have this stuff in stock, send me a PM.

I did that mod on my 1272 when I had it.
The first mistake I made was to choose too wimpy of springs - they need to be really stiff to support the weight of the lenses. But otherwise, it was an easy and beneficial experiment.

I thought it was going to be a lot harder than it was. Sliding the power supply out a few inches made a big difference in how easy it was. It made a big difference in the picture for me, with the rasters maxxed out it seems a lot brighter. Being able to align the pj nearly perfect with the screen seems to be one of the best things I did.
