I've been looking for a cheap (relatively) PS3 for quite a while, thought I found one which turned out to be a scam and is now winding its way through Paypal's claim system, and now, with Warner's announcement, have decided to bite the bullet and get a new 40GB. Does any place sell these for anything lower than the list price of $399? Sony seems to price control these very vigorously and sales on Ebay almost always end up too close to the retail price.

So I'm looking for a deal on a new PS3 40GB. I'd also consider one from a private party - maybe a trade or partial trade? I doubt we'd mesh on wants, but it's worth a shot.

I've seen a few on Craigslist selling for a lttle less than retail but not enough to make it worth while imo. Sounds like looking for a good deal probably has cost you already.

Well, blow me down - here's the rumor I've been waiting for ( http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/01/24/best-buy-discontinuing-80gb-ps3 ) :

Quote:

An anonymous Best Buy employee has sent us a scan of an internal letter, which notifies employees that the 80GB system is being discontinued. "The 80GB version of the PS3 is going closeout and won't be replaced at this time," it reads. "It will come off the planogram on Jan. 28. The 60GB version should already be gone from stores. Only the 40GB version of PS3 will be sold in Best Buy stores at this time."

The 40GB model currently costs $399, and is the cheapest PS3 available. However, it does have a few limitations: it lacks memory card readers, features only two USB ports, and most importantly, loses backwards compatability, as noted in the memo. "This means that there currently isn't a version that is PS2 compatible," it notes.

There have been very shady rumors suggesting Sony is planning on introducing a cheaper $299 version of its console (although that has been repeatedly denied by Sony). Earlier in the week, we also discovered an FCC filing for a white model PS3. Whatever's going on, it appears that Sony's making moves for a big change. Stay tuned.

I just bought a 40GB PS3 today. If this rumor is true, looks like I'll be getting $100 back in a few days, or returning it and getting one marked at $299.

There's 2 things at work.

1. Sony is militant about dealers sticking to MAP (minimum advertised price) You WILL lose all sony lines if you are found underselling the PS3.

2. Theres a lot of demand. EVERYBODY ( me included) is looking for a deal on these. Sony is doing the gunfighters standoff w/ consumers. They aint gonna blink. They think you will when etiher of 2 things happen.
a.metalgear solid hits the stores
b.Gran Turismo 5 hits the stores.

They think the consumers will blink and buy @399.00.

And by gum (in my case) they are right Crying or Very sad

The Pixar films are pretty much what made my Dad and me blink (the bastards). Ratatouille and Cars look F'ing gorgeous. I mean, they just SMOKE the DVD versions. The DVD versions (which are really good DVDs) are not even in the same ballpark.

As for the games, I'm not a gamer... But, I haven't really seen a single one for the PS3 that really interests me. For one thing, the games for these new systems are too damn expensive for my tastes. Still, I love and play Halo 3, Forza Motorsports, and Project Gotham on the 360. That's it. Gran Turismo 5 does look pretty hot, though. Now, if the PS3 controller just didn't suck (I like the 360 controllers much better - they fit in my hand much more nicely).

Try some of the free demos available right through the PS3. All my non-gamer friends who come over just love them... quick, simple, and FREE! Who cares if they're not the 'full' game?
