My primary unit being a 9500LC Ultra, I picked up a 9000LC for the black case it had, and maybe some other spare parts.
The question is: the Ultra had white covers made of lead loosely installed around and over the bell portion of the CRTs. The 9000LC projector had no such covers, just the white plastic and aluminum shields over the tubes.
I was under the impression that x-radiation was emitted from the front of the tubes, where it was absorbed by the glycol solution. The sides of the tube near the phosphor area are covered by the thick metal housing. Are these additional lead shields needed on the rear portion of the CRT bells? There's obviously no harm in leaving them on when the case is installed, but during servicing & tweaking, they tend to fall off.
How much risk is there, in truth, of x-ray emission from these units?

Barco's have very little shielding. Reminds me of a post in which Art tested his G-90's with X ray film on another forum.

FWIW, my 9000LC has the lead shielding. As for risks of exposure. There isn't any risk at all. Take Curt for example; He's constantly exposing himself (not a pretty picture) and is perfectly normal
(seriously though, I can't speak to the risks of running without the shields)
