Besides, on a couple of the early BD players, wouldn't they either not play or not up-convert SD DVD? I thought I remembered that.

I remember hearing this as well. Hopefully this wasn't FUD spread by HD camp because I was completely fearful of BD for quite some time because of it.

Still once I found out that they can play dvd's, the price was still enough to scare me away.

So if Sony were to buy out the other side just to further the BR format are they also going to buy out the people who paid for the other formats players, now that would lawsuit material I would think, class action suite don't you think. If that happened it would make all HD DVD players obsolete on the spot. If that every happened I think Toshiba would be shotting themselves in the foot, I know I would never buy another Toshiba product if they every sold us out like that.

I agree there should only be one format so that it can get going but to sell out or worse yet to have Sony pay off more companies just make Sony look just as bad and I'd also stop buying Sony products too.

Trying to look at that objectively, I keep thinking it could have been written in the BD marketing Dept. as a "canned" news item Confused
- analyst/ consultant for hire
-optimistic forecast for BD, ...6 months from now
- all the external links are BD
-this quote:
In the meantime, Toshiba is unlikely to get much more than lukewarm support from retailers, since it would be unfair to tell a customer to buy a player that has less content available than its competitor. "It's difficult to rationalize that you're being fair to the customer, if you don't tell them that the content advantage is clearly with Blu-ray," Greeson said.

Very Happy Yeah sure, that happens with game consoles too, and Mac computers.
The content advantage will in a half year begin to be with BD, people already have the players, and most of people do not exclusively buy new releases.
- The supposition that HD will want to sell,is news to me and sounds like competitive rumor monging. Why would Sony want to pay anything for an "inferior" technology that they are crushing(in 6 months) especially when Toshiba would face huge recall of unsold product costs/lawsuits from the time they started negotiating, because it is unlikely that BD would assimilate or continue to support the HD brand/technology.

smells Biased to me.

I think Toshiba/Paramount/Universal need to drop the other shoe. Release a LOT of HD DVD discs and under cut the price of Blu Ray discs.

The problem with the idea of lowering the price of the media is Toshiba can't control it - it's the studios who decide that. I suppose Toshiba could subsidize it, either by sales rebates (to the studio) or by subsidizing manufacturing costs, but the studios have no incentive to lower the price of the movies - they don't give a rip which format wins or loses... what difference does it make to them?

SC, doing anything on a $150 player could not have been said a couple of days ago. So, speaking for the first two years that statement would only be possible via pipe dream. Smile

Hey, at least I do not think anyone was silly enough to tatoo Blu-ray or HD DVD to their arm.

Some interesting data on sales of HD-DVD and Blu-ray players from the last few weeks taken from thedigitalbits.com:

Quote:

Okay... so the latest hardware sales data from market research firm NPD Group is in, and it reveals that - as one would expect - HD-DVD player sales have also been impacted by the news of Warner's decision to drop the format later this year. One quick note: The data that follows does NOT include sales of Sony's PlayStation 3 or the HD-DVD add-on drive for Microsoft's Xbox 360. These are stand-alone, set-top players only.

First up, let's look at the month of December (weeks ending 12/8 to 12/29), along with the first two weeks of January (weeks ending 1/5 and 1/12)...

As you can see, Blu-ray Disc players outsold HD-DVD players in the month of December here in the States by about a 60/40 margin, and that split has grown to 70/30 in favor of Blu-ray in the first half of January. This despite the fact that HD-DVD players were (on average) some $200 cheaper than Blu-ray players throughout the holiday shopping season.

But the most striking revelation in the data is the change in the hardware sales ratios between the first and second weeks of January (ending 1/5 and 1/12), reflecting the impact of Warner's announcement (and the mainstream media reaction). The graphs below show player sales for each format both before and after Warner's 1/4 press release...

As you can see, HD-DVD player sales dropped dramatically in the week after Warner's announcement, while Blu-ray Disc player sales nearly doubled over the same period.

Be interesting to see what happens in the week or two later after Toshiba dropped their HD-DVD player prices in half.

Kal
