It's a shame. I think a mistake as well, but in 3 years it won't matter. Plus it's not like all the movies in HD DVD will stop working. A decent priced Dual player would have solved this problemn a longtime ago.
I actually think this will stall adoption and push up prices a lot as well. Probably not good for the consumers in the short to medium term
I like one format, but BD has so many issues right now, it means back to the sidelines for me. I just don;t want to buy a PS3 for a player. Though when dual format players are available for under $200 all is good, but that will probably not happen now.

You to? lol!!!
Though for me it means opting out of HDM for at least a year now until the BD prices fall. I think this is going to be expensive hobby now that Sony have gotten their way.

I have the A2, and the third new HD DVD I bought is still in the wrapper. My own HT hasn't been watched in months, other than for customer demos. Sad but true.
If nothing else, resale prices of HD DVD should be at an all time low on eBay and elsewhere. buy a couple of HD DVD players and you're good for the next 10 years, at least at the rate that I watch..

Well I am OK with it. I only paid $98 for my HD-DVD player and there are movies that are only available on HD-DVD. I will buy a blue Ray player as well when the prices drop. I will have less money in both my players than most people have in one. Plus I will have the ability to watch anything no matter what format it is on.

I am so glad to hear this!!!!
It's about time...I have been waiting for Samsung to release their dual format player...it's a good thing they postponed it's release, now I don't have to spend that money!
Pricing is going to stay as it is, now that the format war is about over, the important thing is to get Blu-Ray into as many homes as possible, before the download format can get going.
Now we will have HD as it should have been all along, just one format.

It looks to me like a back door deal with Sony.
They will still be releasing in HD-DVD just a couple days delays between release dates. That leads me to believe they are keeping their options open for the possibility that HD-DVD may make a surge in sales after the people that received players for Christmas start buying movies.
If they fully believed that Blu-Ray was the clear winner, they would stop HD-DVD production now instead of in May.

to me it looks more like they just need 5 months clean out the pipeline for titles that have already started mastering/production/licensing.

Was there this much doom and gloom when Paramount/DW swapped? I don't recall.
Everyone is acting like they are happy they are neutral because they didnt lose any money! Your players and discs still play! How many movies are released and still scheduled to be released in HD DVD? They will still get plenty of use.
It is not over until Toshiba and Microsoft say it is over.
I will continue like before this announcement to wait until I can get a bluray player under $200 that is profile 2.0. Although after May 08 I will be unable to play or rent WB new release titles in HD

i agree w/ Zaphod.
Warner is gonna clear the pipeline of what hd-dvd's are already in production and then switch.
and as for when its over.... i think Universal will be the lynchpin. When they go blu...HD-dvd is DEAD

Well, I do have a 2:1 in players and movies for Blu-ray vs HD DVD and it really has little dependence on the format. But, I guess there would be little reason at this point to bother buying a second HD DVD player (maybe a 3rd BD!). And I also guess this is going to start drumming up questions like if BD is the only player left will those current HD DVD only titles be re-issued on BD (e.g. Transformers)?

No, like Zaphod said that would cause them to lose a ton of money for all the discs already being worked on or in replication. You can't stop 'cold turkey' without losing a lot of money. Actually, May is sooner than you think. I was surprised to hear it was so soon.

No, likely because it seemed to only be a small step and was a 12 or 18 month contract (I don't remember). The Warner announcement doesn't mention that - while things can always change it's written like it's permanent.
I don't have the numbers in front of me, but I could have sworn that Warner was a lot more prolific in releasing movies than the other two.

Yeah you are probably right, the contract duration was known for Paramounts move.
This is Warner saying that basically we pick BD to win and we are sticking with it at this point in time.
I don't really care, well I do since I already have an HD DVD set up, but really this means that until I can get a $200 BD player I will stick with OTA HD from the HTPC or HD on Demand.
There are still hundreds of movies that I don't own on HD DVD so I could spend the next 10 years purchasing those slowly.
I just don't think that my xbox will last that long.
What is the expected lifespan of this generation of game console? 10 years? 5 years?
Would you expect Sony to include BD in its next gen unit?
