I'm putting together a budget HTPC and need to buy as tuner card soon, Which is the best one for OTA and Digital cable? The pc is a 1 gig athlon 64 with a pci-e nvidea 8600gt 512mb, soon to get the LG HD/BLURAY drive. My display is a sony 1272 projector fed with an HDFury. I'm trying to keep the tuner card under $100. I have one empty AGP slot and two empty PCI slots.

You don't mention OS, but if you're just using XP and you're in a metro area with good OTA HD reception, you can get used MyHD tuner cards pretty cheap on fleabay from time to time. The older '120' model would easily go for under $100. They have a hardware decoder, so processor utilization is almost nothing. If you're using MCE, it won't work, though.

Google MyHD MDP-120 or 130.

Digital Connection has the older 120 model new in box for $99.

https://www.digitalconnection.com/store/Product_List.asp?CID=3&CAT=HDTV%20TUNER%20CARD

Saves all recorded files as standard .ts HD transport streams.

If you use AnyDVD, it will work as a scaling DVD player, too.

One other nice thing is it uses it's own video output, so no matter how F'ed up your video timings are on your desktop, it outputs standard DTV resolutions.

Okay, after installing this Hauppauge card I found out that it is not compatible at all with my system. I should have done more research. I'll ask again, Which hdtv tuner card will work well with an amd athlon 64 with 1 gig ram, with a pci-e nvidea 8600gt 512mb? I want to be able to record and playback OTA and Cable, DVR style.

I was going to go with a MyHD 130 card but then I found it won't play nice with a dual core processor. SO now I'm looking too. Have you checked out the dvico cards as sugested? I have to get around to that myself.

It doesn't like dual core processors? Are not the only single cores left Celeron? I wonder why its having difficulty.

Can't remember the exact reasoning. Check out the AVS thread on it. There are tons of pages about it.

I was on the AVS/HiPix open source team back in 2002, I know the HiPix had issues with hyperthread and dual processors and I believe it used the same Teralogic TL880 Chipset as the MyHD card. The card will function perfect an almost junk PC of around 700 MHz or better with 256 mb ram. It was workhorse for me & worked very well and still have several movies on my server I record from HBO & Showtime when you could use a Dish 5000/Modulator combo.

There happens to be one on EBay right now. I have a couple I still use, the software is stable but not at all pretty.

The only issue with the MyHD and multi-core processors is with DVD playback, as far as I know. I've been using a 130 on my Duo for about a year now.

Interesting... It may have only been the HiPix that had issue then.

I see a lot of USB tuner gizmos out there... Are they any better or worse than a card?

Nope not breaking any rules. So long as it's not a full projector it's ok.
