Well, maybe not ruined, but seriously downgraded.
After a couple weeks of watching (and fighting various problems with) HD and BD discs, I just popped in an SD copy of Princess Bride. Good grief, it was like going back to VHS. I couldn't believe how much softer and noisier it looked. This is scaled to 720p in either case.
I still enjoyed watching it -- it's a good movie after all -- but I had to really work to avoid obsessing about the reduced picture quality.
I am going to have to get the kinks worked out of playing the high def formats on my pc asap, 'cause I definitely can not rationalize ever buying another SD disc. It's a good thing I didn't have a very large DVD collection in the first place, or I might be seriously bummed.

Unless it is something like the Simpson's Movie then I'd take a course away from regular DVDs. Maybe TV series that are unlikely to get the HD treatment before 2010 is another exception.

I felt the same way about SD discs after watching HD or BD until I got an SDI modified DVD player...They all go through my DVDO HD+ and to be honest, I don't even care what format I get a movie in anymore SDI certainly is not HD or BD but it is way better than SD, IMHO

I'm pretty lazy, I let the DVDO output everything at 1080i...I think I can make it output different resolutions for different inputs, but until the holidays are over I really don't feel like digging into the settings and redoing EVERYTHING, but I will in a few weeks....maybe

Until someone comes up with a $100 self-contained SDI solution for regular DVD I fail to see the need to invest more. By trying to make DVD look the best that it can be only serves to decentize the need for HD versions. I'd much rather have original information than guesswork on Jill's nipples.

I agree. SD-DVD was ruined at least a year ago for me - probably longer than that. I can't believe how bad SD DVD looks compared to HD-DVD or BD... and I don't even have a great projector. IMHO, at this point, unless you have a huge SD DVD library, spending a bunch of money on a SDI DVD player is just silly. It's like trying to make a sow's ear into a silk purse.
I use a Toshiba HD-XA1 that I use to play my SD DVD's. It's supposedly an excellent scaling player. I tend to agree, since it's the best-looking SD-DVD image I've ever seen. The XA1 is connected to the projector via HD Fury through an Extron matrix switcher. Upscaled DVD looks really nice. A newer DVD like Cars looks absolutely gorgeous... Right up until you put an HD-DVD or BD in player.
The difference between DVD and HD-DVD is frickin' NIGHT and DAY.

SD-DVD would be a lot better if it wasn't for all the compression noise, EE, and ringing that gets added to the picture. We did a comparison of SD-DVD vs Blu-ray using Casino Royale a few weeks ago and the amount of EE/ringing is just annoying on the SD-DVD version.
That's been the nicest surprise with Blu-ray for me so far: The complete lack of any sort of artificial EE on 99% of the titles I've seen so far.

Yep, kind of like watching VCDs on a 27" TV. Actually, if you want DVD to look good again, watch a bunch of VCDs, then switch back to DVD.

Nah, SD DVD would still suck ass - it would just suck ass... less.
Seriously, though... Considering HD/BD has exactly SIX times the resolution, I don't care how little EE or sharpening they do on a DVD title, it'll still suck compared to the gorgeous pic that's possible with BD/HD.
Can you tell I really like BD/HD?

So, that would be kind of like smashing your finger with a hammer a few times to remind yourself how great it is to not have to smash your finger with a hammer... right?

True, but what bugs me is when something isn't done as well as it could be. If an SD-DVD is authored 'perfectly' at least it looks clean and pretty good, albeit at a lower resolution. If the SD-DVD is authored badly and includes tons of EE/ringing/compression issues it just drives me nuts as they *COULD* have done better if they simply paid attention!
I have to tell you, I'm loving HD on disc too. I got 7 Blu-ray discs in the mail today.
Was watching the new Blu-ray disc of Close Encounters. Wow. Talk about clean for such an old movie. It's absolutely amazing. Ever since I bought into HD on disc I've finally forgotten that I'm just watching a low-rez image. It finally looks "right".
I think it's absolutely amazing how far we've come in just a little over 10 years.
