What resolution/timings are PS3 owners using for gaming? I created a setup for 480P/60Hz on my 9500Ultra, but it still ain't right.

TIA...

Happy Holidays!

Steve

Why 480P? My God, the scan lines must look like No2 Pencils lined up on the screen.

I set up my PS3 to use only 1080i, and everything looks great. Obviously, it's going to scale 720p up to 1080i, but since I'll either be playing games, trailers, or 1080p movies, those will all look great at 1080i. I can't see why you wouldn't want to use 1080p for everything on your 9500 Ultra.

I have a Tosh HD-XA2 and a PS3 for Blueray. Both are set to 1080P/60. 1080P is sent via HDMI from both these sources to a Moome HDMI VIM card in the projector, a Madrigal MP9. 99% of its use is for film watching. All of it done at 1080P.

Since I have a PS3, I thought I may play some games on it from time to time. Well, while Blueray movies look phenomenal, games (and I'm talking latest generation PS3 games, not PS2) look like they are running at an entirely different resolution/timing and are unusable with the Marquee's setup memory for 1080P/60. So I figured they must be running at 480P. Or 720P. Neither of which I use. So I created a setup for 480P (60Hz I think) and tried playing the game again. Much, much better, but still wrong.

So my question remains: What resolution/timing do games run at on the PS3?

Thanks!

Steve

Unfortunately, I have yet to play a game on the PS3--not even a demo.

I think some games vs other games are different. In display setup, you can tell the PS3 which resolutions your display supports. If you check them all - 720p, 1080i, 1080p (480p is on by default), then each game will run at its preferred resolution. If, however you check only 1080p, then a game rendered at 720p will be scaled up to 1080p, which should be fine.

I turned off 720p and 1080p on mine since neither is a good match for my old 12xx. It seems to just run 1080i all the time. I think you could do the same w/1080p.

I deselected 720P and 1080i in the display settings for the PS3, and the game still looks wrong. I discovered that this game runs at 720P (60Hz, I'm assuming), therefore I just need to create a setup for that resolution.

Further reading on the web about this reveals lots of complaining that 720P is the highest resolution that games on the PS3 run at.

Thanks,

Steve

Wow, that sucks. Some older HD RPTV's won't even sync to 720p - only 1080i.

I just assumed (incorrectly, I might add) that if you deselected 720p and 1080i, that the PS3 would force everything to 1080p. If the game needed to render to 720p, it would simply be rendered and then upscaled to 1080p before display. They could do it that way if they wanted.

Apparently, I have a 720p setup and don't know it (or the 3-4 games I've played will run at other resolutions.)

There is a PS3 game named LAIR that is 1080p and 7.1 sound track. It looks great at 1080p on my plasma and looks almost as good at 1080i on my Marquee 8111+. I have not played many PS3 games on my 8111 but even the ones that say "Supported HD video output: 720p" were being scaled to 1080i and they looked great. On my plasma I set the PS3 to 1080p and every thing gets scaled to 1080p and all the games look great including PS2 games. My PS3 seems to scale everything to the highest rez enabled (using HDMI output).

What revision software is on your PS3? I am running 2.10

I'm running 2.10, too. I'll have to do some experiments I guess to find out what res/refresh it's running at different times with different games. The only games I have are Motostorm, and some demos I downloaded - Simpsons, F1 Champinonship, Gran Turismo HD, and I think I downloaded the Warhawk demo last night. Downloaded Ridge Racer 7, but deleted it.

I don't think you're allowed any refreshes other than 60Hz.

Most games seem to be 720p, with a few running at 1080i. Mind you, I only have 480p, 720p, and 1080i enabled in my PS3 display settings so I don't know if some games would actually output 1080p if allowed. A lot more seem to be 720p than 1080i.

P.S. Anyone else having fun with the recent Burnout Paradise that came out a week or two ago? This is game that seems to get driving right: All anyone cares about is going really fast and having crazy accidents. Smile The feeling of speed on an 8' wide screen is unreal and the damage model for car crashes is fantastic. I don't know what the point of the real game is (due out in Jan 2008) but who cares? Driving around and smashing up cars is so much fun!

Edit: Check out this montage of crashes: http://youtube.com/watch?v=79BhskXjwgw and http://youtube.com/watch?v=Osm_i_Dnkdo
I love the way the camera goes to outside 3rd person view in slo-mo when you crash.

Here's a couple of guys playing head to head in the demo (didn't realize you could do that): http://youtube.com/watch?v=YdBqpk-so0U

Hi guys. Just a short question according the PS3 resolution. If I'll play a 1080p game and the PS3 is configured to output it in 1080i will it output 1920x1080i or just downscale to 720p?
